California deserves it's own thread. This crazy state is highly entertaining.

California would lead the U.S. in significantly changing the standard for when police can fire their weapons under legislation that cleared its first hurdle Tuesday after an emotionally charged debate over deadly shootings that have roiled the country.
It's time to change a "reasonable force" standard that hasn't been updated in California since 1872, making it the nation's oldest unchanged use-of-force law, said Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, a San Diego Democrat who introduced the measure.

"It must be guided by the goals of safeguarding human life," she said.
A state Senate committee advanced the legislation that would allow police to use deadly force only in situations where it is necessary to prevent imminent and serious injury or death to the officer or another person.
Now, California's standard makes it rare for officers to be charged after a shooting and rarer still for them to be convicted. Frequently it's because of the doctrine of "reasonable fear": if prosecutors or jurors believe that officers have a reason to fear for their safety, police can use deadly force.

California is the greatest state in this Nation by a long stretch...
1) By far the most beautiful / and second place is a distant 2nd
2) By far the most geographically diverse / and 2nd place is a distant 2nd
3) The most productive state
4) The most popular state / projections say by 2025 15% of the US population will live in California
Odd note:
By 2025 it has been suggested that 1-in-4 Americans will live in Texas or California

Utah has more National parks and also has the fewest natural disasters. California has more congestion, population, higher crime rate and more nut jobs. Utah, however, does have the Mormons. Delaware is so small nobody cares.

Plenty of beauty in America and they all vie for the top spot - CA is not unique in that regard. Second place, even assuming that CA is #1 (which it's not in my book), is not distant at all, and there's a load of states that would vie for that distinction.

I agree with Cleets on the beauty aspect. California has everything except a large swath of non-coniferous deciduous forest. That’s about the only thing the east coast has over California: a gorgeous autumn.
As far as beaches go, no contest whatsoever. Southern California beaches are basically 75 degrees +/-10 and sunny 300+ days per year and there is little humidity and no mosquitoes or flies. And the women. Oh, the women.

Eh, I'm in the "it's all good" camp. Hawaii is gorgeous. I love Maine. West Virginia has some gorgeous areas. Lots of Pennsylvania is gorgeous. The Hudson River Valley and the stretch out to Syracuse in New York is some of the prettiest spots you'll see. Florida is pretty. I loved Oregon when I was there. That trip I took last year to Michigan (did the Upper Peninsula) opened my eyes to that part of the country. I've been to California and I've loved it. Just have loved other places as well.

Fair enough. I was editing my last post to add a blurb on SoCal beaches when you posted. I’ve been pretty much everywhere but the prairie states, and I too find the best in each place.
But California as a whole has no peer. It’s the Heinz 57 of states, again just ruined by its government.

Class 4/5 River Raft
World class mountain bike
Stand on a 10,800 foot peak
Hike a true desert trail with thousand year old Joshua Trees
Scuba dive (in a kelp forest)
and have a choice of any of those in the same afternoon
California by a light year... and 2nd place ain't even close
Look I love this country a lot and have lived from North Carolina Texas to Hawaii and more..
and travel all over this country over 100 days a year for the last 20 years
California by a LIGHT YEAR in this contest

I have driven through most states and heading to New England is August. All have great natural beauty with the possible exception of New Mexico. I love N Carolina and the southern states. Even Nebraska with its grassy plains has its beauty. Lived in California, it has spectacular beauty, especially in the Northern areas, but the congestion and state government take a lot away. 93 is right in bragging about E Maryland, though it rates behind A few places,

One thing I’ve learned from discussions like these and with my own family is that some people just aren’t willing to embrace the unfamiliar. My father is hilarious in this regard. He ONLY likes places with the aforementioned non-coniferous deciduous forest.
I find extreme beauty in places like Utah and New Mexico. He will non-stop bitch about them from the moment he gets off until the moment he gets back on the plane. A place without leafy forests is worthless to him.

Still true in a relative sense but CA is a pale moonshadow of what it used to be quality-of-life wise. I'd have to go back to work and live hand-to-mouth for my last couple of decades. The State's best days are long behind it - you have to wait at a fucking stoplight to get on the freeway.
