Catalonia will declare independence from Spain in a matter of days, the leader of the autonomous region has told the BBC.
In his first interview since Sunday's referendum, Carles Puigdemont said his government would "act at the end of this week or the beginning of next".
Meanwhile, Spain's King Felipe VI said organisers of the vote put themselves "outside the law".
He said the situation in Spain was "extremely serious", calling for unity.
Hundreds of thousands of people across Catalonia have been protesting over Spanish police violence during the vote, during which nearly 900 people were hurt.

The two sides are not talking, and when asked what would happen if the Spanish government tried to intercede, Puigdemont said it would be "an error which changes everything".

Yes I'm sure France will start a Robespierre Minh Trail and ship weapons to the Catalonians

(theyve never been fired and only dropped once)

Cuba was AWASH in guns - as was Vietnam. Nobody EVER said anything of the sort about either country

If not for that pesky Spanish Navy that would lock it down like a brick- they can get a few guns through in the mail I guess

This will not last long - the Spanish government has already whipped their tails and that was just over a referendum

The only hope they have is in the court of public opinion - and they will not only be against Spain but the EU as well

Interesting photo of Catalan firemen in their gear standing between the the civilians and the spanish cops this morning.

As for weapons, the Basques next door are said to have lots of them.

Yes, any "Civil War" will be very short lived - they'll march in, arrest the leaders, take them to Madrid, sentence them to a long time in prison, and this will be over. Could be a lot of violence and casualties to get to the leaders, but I think Madrid has made it clear that they will accept any level of casualties, especially on the Catalan side, to end this as they see fit.

Why on earth would the people of a modern nation ever need to have weapons? The government will always take care of your health and safety. Things like revolutions and bad governments are things from the past, they certainly can't happen in today's societies.
