I had to look up what the riot was about.

What's worse, flying across country to defend a losing 150 year old confederacy or lacking the sense to ignore them.... :ohno:

"Saturday's rally was the latest event drawing white nationalists and right-wing activists from across the country to this Democratic-voting town -- a development precipitated by the city's decision to remove symbols of its Confederate past..."

I'd worry more about her flying into Cullowhee. I hope she has a sturdy hang glider.

This.

I think the only way to fly into Cullowhee is to crash land into a cow pasture. :?

Thousands on the white nationalist side? Somehow I doubt that.

I doubt the number of these guys isn't half of what there are at Mayday or G8 or WTO protests, but we'll get the line the violent nazis are taking over the Republican party.

They really shouldn't be doing the "take down the Confederate monuments thing." It's like a movement where all of a sudden some people decided to start demanding that. They're just being assholes. Like what they did in New Orleans. There was no real reason for it.

It's particularly bad to insist on removing a memorial to Robert E. Lee in Virginia. The guy was simply put in position of having to decide between command of the Union Army offered to him by Lincoln or remaining loyal to his State. In those days the State was, I think, viewed as sovereign. He simply made a decision to remain loyal to those closest to him.

He was an outstanding military commander and the State of Virginia should be proud of him as a native son. He gave up a career he loved in the US military because of loyalty to Virginia. People who want a monument to him in a State he gave up his US Army career for taken down are vindictive pricks.
But Lee's commitment to the Army was superseded by his commitment to Virginia. After turning down an offer from President Abraham Lincoln to command the Union forces, Lee resigned from the military and returned home. While Lee had misgivings about centering a war on the slavery issue, when Virginia voted to secede from the nation on April 18, 1861, Lee agreed to help lead the Confederate forces.

I completely agree with you John. Lee was a thoughtful and honorable man. People could learn a lot from the example he set.

Rather than confront the past and learn from it these alt-lefties want to erase it. Their efforts to take down confederate memorials have something in common with the Taliban demolishing Buddha sculptures.

^^^^This. Lee was a man of integrity who just loved his state.

Bill Ayers and Bobby Rush were traitors too. When should they be executed?

Lee wasn't a perfect man but he had some admirable qualities. Rather than trying to erase his significant role in our history why don't we use these memorials as an opportunity to discuss where we are, where we came from and where we're going? Erasing history doesn't automatically change it or the future.

The victors already wrote the history here

Now they want to rewrite it

Im not a "Lost Causer" but what is coming out these days about Lee from the SJWs is as inaccurate as what the unreconstructed put out

I think that at the time people thought of the State they lived in as a nation unto itself. Especially a State like Virginia. I think it was kind of like a bunch of small nations agreeing to live together in a network of a larger Union. If Lee had accepted the offer to lead the Union army he would have been a traitor to the "nation" closest to him. He would have been a traitor to his family, etc. Then he was asked to lead an army to defend his home against an invading force.

Lee was no more a traitor than George Washington was. It's just that George Washington's side won the war he was fighting in so now he's a hero in the nation that resulted from it.

BTW I hate to have to defend something Trump said but in this case there's something to it. He's getting a lot of criticism for referring to "all sides" with respect to the violence today. The idea is that it was ALL the White Nationalists. They are solely responsible for the violence. And it does appear that a While Nationalist was probably responsible for the most egregious act (the car driving into the crowd).

But I saw the videos today. I think it is quite possible that the violence was initiated by the counter protesters.

Like this one:

phpBB [video]

I also saw videos with the counter protesters throwing things at the White Nationalists, etc. It's evident that the counter protesters were looking for confrontation at least as much as the White Nationalists were.

Here's the deal:

When a group with an unpopular view protests, leave them alone. If you want to stand around with signs and such, fine. But don't seek violent confrontation with them. Don't throw things at them. Don't try to block their way. Etc.

And if a politician is REALLY going to be objective and talk about what people should and should not do that politician is going to have to say some things about the counter protesters involved in this event too. They, or at least some of them, are not innocent.
