Chile and Brazil….That’s a long fucking walk too….
Would probably have to start that in early November, maybe around the 3rd.

The Biden administration’s special envoy to Haiti resigned in protest of “inhumane” large-scale expulsions of Haitian migrants to their homeland wracked by civil strife and natural disaster, U.S. officials said Thursday.

Daniel Foote was appointed to the position only in July, following the assassination of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise. Even before the migrant expulsions from the small Texas border town of Del Rio, the career diplomat was known to be deeply frustrated with what he considered a lack of urgency in Washington and a glacial pace on efforts to improve conditions in Haiti.

Foote wrote Secretary of State Antony Blinken that he was stepping down immediately “with deep disappointment and apologies to those seeking crucial changes.”

“I will not be associated with the United States inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegal immigrants to Haiti, a country where American officials are confined to secure compounds because of the danger posed by armed gangs to daily life,” he wrote. “Our policy approach to Haiti remains deeply flawed, and my policy recommendations have been ignored and dismissed, when not edited to project a narrative different from my own.”

Agreed. He needs to get off his ass, send the feds, and allow them to protect and let the migrants in.

Vaccinate and document them of course.

It's a complex problem, but in a nutshell, what is so flawed and how do we fix it?

We already allow more than 1M immigrants a year and we're closing in on an all time high for percentage of population that are immigrants. So we're not letting in too few. I know the process itself is awful, but it's run by the government, what would you expect?

Yes, its flawed. We should be putting 100% of these illegal immigrants on planes, not 1/4 of them like we are now, destination Haiti.

I never understand what the no border folks are thinking, other than trying to virtue signal that they are champions of empathy. Take Haiti for instance, if we had an open border with Haiti, i.e., anyone in Haiti could come to and stay in the US forever, why would anyone stay in Haiti? There are 11M people in Haiti today. With an open border, easily half of them come here. Where do we suddenly put 5M people, the majority of which don't speak either English or Spanish and the majority have minimal, if any education? And why does it stop at Haiti? Venzuelaens are coming north in large numbers - 28M people live there. What if 5 or 6 million came to the realization that life in the US is better than where they are. Some 40M people live in the Caribbean countries, another 180M live in Central America, and that's just a fraction of the population in Africa. At what point does the number of migrants, per year, exceed our ability to handle the influx? We're not even that great with the numbers we bring in now. How do we do better with 10x that number? Even more than that?

Eh, you let people come in, establish new communities, new businesses, create more tax revenues. You document them as they come (better than chasing them around the desert if they know they'll be allowed entry at a border). Even better if we can get an EU-style system with the Americas. Heck, an EU-style system with the Americas, Europe, and other allies would be amazing.

There's a lot of Americans born here who contribute nothing; that's fine, it is what it is, but I'd rather we have people who want to come here and work hard. Establishing a larger taxpayer base and spending less to chase people around is just another positive.

The US is an enormous nation; we'll be ok. The Western Hemisphere would be much stronger for it too. And it's not like everyone is going to be coming here. People would come and go. If they find a better life here, good for them. If not, they'll go back.

No idea, but I can't imagine it's a large percentage that returns.

However our immigrant population is pretty large right now (and we probably need more for continued economic growth). The US foreign born population is nearing its highest ever level (14.4% in 2020 vs. 14.8% in the 1890s) and we'll probably surpass it soon. While people are focusing on the border, we're quietly having an "I lift my lamp beside the golden door" moment...which is fantastic.

The lion’s share of Haitians on our border have not lived in Haiti for several years.

They have been living in Chile (mostly), Brasil, Suriname, Colombia, Belize, etc.

But not Venezuela, because even Haitians understand that you cannot eat Socialism (quote: Mao Tse Tung)

They got the message from this administration that the doors were open and they started caravanning north. They got around the Darien/Dorien Pass on ferries from Colombia to Panama. Many of them left some pretty good mining jobs in Chile (because coal keeps the lights on) to do all of this.

Few to none of these Haitians are fleeing Haiti.

I think we should use science to come up with a mathematical formula for how many immigrants we should accept in a given year. The formula should differentiate between numbers of skilled and unskilled immigrants. Anyone who opposes this approach and wants open borders is anti-science. :coffee:
