I'm not making any excuses but it clearly says all that violence occurred AFTER and not DURING a peaceful demonstration. We've seen escalations. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with saying that.
It was the same demonstration. If it resulted in violence, then it wasn't peaceful.
It can't be peaceful at the start and then become violent?

Are you sure it started peacefully? Was it peaceful only as long as they were not confronted by the police? Did the protestors intend violence from the outset if they were confronted?

I would say you determine whether it was peaceful or not by the end result. The end result was violence.

If it ends violently (or in Portland’s case, CONTINUES for weeks violently), it don’t much matter what it looked like in the beginning or middle.

Fun fact. Hitler HATED socialism. I mean he railed against it in his speeches. He even picked a fight with the Russians and history has proven time and time again that it isn't the smartest move to do that. It was his attempt (partially) to rid the world of socialism.

Hitler also had his Brown Shirts abduct citizens off the streets before he assumed power. One could make an argument that we are closer to pre-NAZI Germany than we are to a socialistic state.

It should be more clearly stated that Hitler abhorred communism. Mein Kampf clearly outlines his hatred of the Communism (Marxist) ideology.

Fun Fact#1 - Nazi's were fascists. The name National Socialist German Workers' Party, came about from Hitler's desire to redefine socialism with a more nationalist flair. The NAZI party was anti-Marxism, anti-Communists. The NAZI party came out of the German Workers' Party and the name was maintained to help draw from the social democrats and communist parties.

Fun Fact #2 - The term "Nazi" predates the NSDAP and was an insult. It was derogatory. It meant a backwards person. In fact, the NSDAP tried to re-appropriate the word but failed. Nazi was a term mostly used by people who were against the NSDAP.

True. Opinion #1 - ideology is a circle not a straight line. If you go too far to the right you end up with a system very similar in a lot of ways to going too far to the left (Hitler and Stalin's government's had a lot in common).

The Nazis and the Marxists in Weimar Germany hated each other because of differences over nationalism, pacifism, and race/ethnic scapegoating.

Otherwise they were relatively indistinguishable.

But one thing is for sure - both philosophies require a police state to achieve power. The Nazis won that battle but the real difference between the two sides was the Nazis had this gifted orator named Adolf. Post-Weimar Germany probably would not have tried to take over the world had the Communists won out but it would have been as miserable a place as the Soviet Union (and allied with it)

And yet fascism requires the same authoritarian and totalitarian control that communism requires in terms of political repression.
