Ran across this poem yesterday and it stuck me that the author is not just talking about fireworks.

"Fourth of July" by Howard Nemerov:

Because I am drunk, this Independence Night,
I watch the fireworks from far away,
from a high hill, across the moony green
Of lakes and other hills to the town harbor,
Where stately illuminations are flung aloft,
One light shattering in a hundred lights
Minute by minute. The reason I am crying,
Aside from only being country drunk,
That is, may be that I have just remembered
The sparklers, rockets, roman candles and
so on, we used to be allowed to buy
When I was a boy, and set off by ourselves
At some peril to life and property.
Our freedom to abuse our freedom thus
Has since, I understand, been remedied
By legislation. Now the authorities
Arrange a perfectly safe public display
To be watched at a distance; and now also
The contribution of all the taxpayers
Together makes a more spectacular
Result than any could achieve alone
(A few pale pinwheels, or a firecracker
Fused at the dog's tail). It is, indeed, splendid:
Showers of roses in the sky, fountains
Of emeralds, and those profusely scattered zircons
Falling and falling, flowering as they fall
And followed distantly by a noise of thunder.
My eyes are half-afloat in happy tears.
God bless our Nation on a night like this,
And bless the careful and secure officials
Who celebrate our independence now.

Yes, as of 2017 were made legal. Big debate, as PA is getting lots of $$$ from 12% fireworks tax (in addition to 6% sales tax).
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/in-pa ... r-BB16ivpq

I would say most weren't set off legally...but my township you probably would have had to have 10x the amount of cops writing tickets all night long to get it stopped..

:thumb: Good. I'd hate to think a Law and Order Trump Republican like you would approve of people breaking the law. We can't pick and choose which laws to follow - that's how we get chaos and anarchy.

I don't see how you can catch the people in time. It's illegal on the beaches here and I've seen the cops quickly get the people who set them off.
You're right in regards to that which is malum in se and/or that greatly negatively affects others and their property. Ex rioting, looting, burning, attacking the police, illegally blocking roads, attacking peoples vehicles, etc..The only debate should be on the malum prohibitum stuff that doesn't negatively affect others, to be decided at the state and/or local level.

Shooting fireworks at other people, their cars, houses, etc obviously is wrong.
On private property at a "reasonable hour" should be no debate IMHOP.

The only debate in IMHOP should be
-allow them to be set off on public property? (with stipulatons).
-what are "reasonable" hours. If you're setting them off late late at night (and you don't live way out in the country) you're likely keeping some neighbors awake. That can be addressed with noise ordinances. IMHOP more leniency could be given to NY Eve & the 4th of July (say midnight instead of 10 pm)..
-penalties.
..peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard..
..But you have to go home now. We have to have peace…
..I know how you feel, but go home, and go home in peace.

I don't disagree with the protesters. You have a right to peacefully assemble. Once you become peaceful or you break the conditions of the permit (which are usually there for your protection) you are now in violation of the law. :twocents: :coffee:

Setting off fireworks are a local issue. If you want it to be legal, go to a town council meeting.

I would say an established noise ordinance is nice but you aren't going to be very effective enforcing it. Honestly, anything after 10/1030 is fucking annoying. If you get caught, you have the fireworks confiscated and you're fined. No leniency should be given b/c it's a holiday. NO MERCY!

Bowing to threats posed by the coronavirus, President Trump reversed course on Thursday and canceled the portion of the Republican National Convention to be held in Jacksonville, Fla., just weeks after he moved the event from North Carolina because state officials wanted the party to take health precautions there.

Eastman Kodak (remember this former Dow component?) to get federal loan to ramp up the manufacturing of generic drug materials in the US and make us less dependent on foreign countries.

On the surface, this seems like a great move. Some 90% of pharmaceuticals taken in the US are generics. Almost none of the materials to make these drugs are manufactured in the US, which leaves us highly vulnerable.

The U.S. economy saw the biggest quarterly plunge in activity ever, though the plummet in the second quarter wasn’t as bad as feared.

Gross domestic product from April to June plunged 32.9% on an annualized basis, according to the Commerce Department’s first reading on the data released Thursday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a drop of 34.7%.

Still, it was the worst drop ever, with the closest previously coming in mid-1921.

Wow. Who could have predicted this?
CNBC Headline:
Second-quarter GDP plunged by worst-ever 32.9% amid virus-induced shutdown
is totally Fake News, because second quarter GDP actually fell 9.5% from the prior quarter. US News, along with most MSM headlines and talking heads pedalled the same misleading headline
Second Quarter GDP Plunged by Record 32.9%
https://www.usnews.com/news/economy/art ... on-economy
because most of them failed to mention ANNUALIZED in the headlines or their talking points, and only mentioned within the article "annualized". Most I looked at don't even mention that GDP actually fell by 9.5% from the prior quarter, although US News mentions it within the article:
Compared to the previous quarter, GDP fell by 9.5% from April through June.
Most Americans who saw or heard those headlines, I bet actually think GDP fell 32.9% from the prior quarter, not 9.5%.
