Campus Happenings

This topic needs it's own thread. The ridiculous stuff happening at colleges these days is mind boggling.
Here is the first post:
University of Missouri allows students to change names
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The University of Missouri said Wednesday it'll now allow students to change their names on their student ID, transcript and diploma.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (
http://bit.ly/2dkq5Gl ) reported that effective immediately, students can get a new ID with their preferred name. This comes two years after allowing students to change their first and middle names on class rosters and their student email. There's no timetable on when transcripts and diplomas will reflect name changes. Alumni will also have the opportunity to have their transcripts or diploma reprinted with an alternative name.
"We think it's long overdue and should have been done with those changes a few years ago, but we're so happy it's (happening)," said Jack Miller, University of Missouri junior and communications officer for the campus' Triangle Coalition, which forms part of the campus' LGBT organizations.
University spokesman Christian Basi said the change is something administrators have wanted for quite some time.
Students can change their names to anything they want, including a name that's typically associated with a different gender, as long as it's not derogatory. A name change is free, but there's a fee of $15 with replacing a student ID.
The Triangle Coalition argued that charging transgender students the fee is unfair.
"We will be talking to administrators about this. We think it makes more sense to charge the much smaller fee of a few dollars that incoming freshmen pay," said Miller.
According to Basi the change is necessary because of the technology used inside the cards. The campus ID cards are used to pay for meals in dining halls and to get into some campus buildings.

I have to admit that I don't know much about why this is necessary. And I can't figure out what happens relative to the real world.
"Yes, I did graduate."
"But there is no record of you graduating from that school."
"That's because my name was Booger then and that's what my diploma says."
"Oh, I see. Well thanks for coming in for the interview. We'll let you know if you got the job or not within a few days."

A University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student had a serious complaint for his campus’ official “Hate Response Team”: he was “very upset” by a Harry Potter mural in a college dorm.
The mural, in the Laux Residence Hall, depicts Neville Longbottom, a character from the Harry Potter films. The nerdy Neville was played by actor Matthew Lewis, who blossomed into a notable hunk post-puberty. The mural shows him as both a geeky boy and an attractive young man — transformed, according to the mural’s caption, by a stay at the Laux Residence Hall itself.
The depiction of this metamorphosis “represents our ideal society and everything I am trying to fight against,” wrote the offended student, whose name is redacted. “It represents white power. Man power. Cis power. Able power. Class power. ECT [sic] ect. I am angry that I know the people who put this mural up, and I am anger [sic] because I know the people who let this mural be put up. Like I said earlier, maybe I am being a little sensitive, but it is how I feel. This represents, to me, our society, and I do not want it up on this wall. Why do we need a BEFORE and AFTER?”

For what it's worth (which is nothing), new college entrants are now Gen Z. In the next 2-3 years, it'll mostly be Gen Z occupying colleges. Millenials are now entering their late 20s and early 30s.

C'mon Gen Z! The bar has been set low for you by those helicopter-parented hipsters. You can do better.

Millennials and college kids are just adorable with their imagined guilt, faux outrage, and outright idealism.

I think every generation goes through this phase, but most get out of it by 10th or 11th grade in high school once they become aware of the real world. The Millenials, on the other hand, have been deferring on the real world for almost a decade now. Many still live with their parents and are milking their parents' health insurance eligibility right up until the age 26 limit.

Their helicopter parents are complicit in this.

I'm not sure how the helicopter parent emerged. That generation didn't grow up getting participation trophies and didn't wear helmets every time they decided to engage in physical exercise, yet they created the generation that did. SMH.

ROCK HILL
The protest began with a number: 715 victims of police violence in 2016.
The movement intensified with a building: Winthrop University’s Tillman Hall.
Around 70 students and faculty participated in a lively, exuberant and peaceful march on campus Wednesday to raise support for renaming the school’s administration building, which protesters say represents a man who espoused racist ideals.

Tillman, who was South Carolina’s governor in the early 1890s and a U.S. senator until his death in 1918, was instrumental in both founding Clemson University and establishing Winthrop College as a teaching school for women. But he was also famous for his violent rhetoric against the state’s black population as a supporter of lynch mobs.
“It’s a symbol of hatred, prejudice and white supremacy,” said Samantha Valdez, a graduate student with the Student Socialists Union. “For us to keep up our diversity on campus, we need to change these elements on campus.”

Well shit. In that case, shut down Clemson and Winthrop. Problem solved.

For HUNDREDS of years the phenomenon of "Why are young people so stupid" has been happening...
And yet here we are
We made it off the Savanna and into mud huts
We made it through the dark ages and plague
We made it through world wars
Somehow I think we'll make it through this...
Each generation of young people get to define their world

You are missing the point here. We aren't calling them stupid. We are calling them pussies. There are still the x% that are bright and will be leaders in the future. But they will be challenged with leading pussies.

That's already happening though. The baby boomers were the first generation of pussies.
Coincidentally, the Millenials are their kids.

And they raised the kids that parented the millenials. It's cyclical.

I work with a 25-year old female who told me a school related story. Apparently a local 12 yo took his iphone to school and the school confiscated it for the remainder of the school year

as it was pointed out in advance to all the parents. The mother is obviously upset that she'll be paying for a phone monthly until June that's in school custody, but that's beside the point.....
Co-worker: "But what if he needs to contact a parent?"
Me: "Believe me, there was civilization before 2007. We all somehow made it without carrying a cell phone to school. They had these things called landlines, which I think most schools still have today."
Co-worker: "Oh, yeah."

There aren't two generations between boomers and millenials. The median point of boomers is mid 1950s and the median of millenials was 1990.
Do some reading on Generation Jones. These were the late boomers who ran into many of the same economic challenges in the late 70s, early 80s that the millenials did in the late 200X's. And they are the parents of them for the most part.

I had to read up on Gen Z. Looks like it is kids born 2000-present.
So my sons and I are completely free and clear of the scourge of the evil baby boomers and millenials.
X and Z ftw. I think these Z kids will be hard workers and realists.

Interesting and I will. It makes sense and your going to see some overlap for sure. Also keep in mind that boomers were having kids later in life.

Okay,
So the world ended after the Roman Empire collapsed..?
Empires come and go
Who cares if our children's children are pussies - it's meaningless in this moment
It only has as much power as you give it
Zero percent of my life is affected by kids (other than they make my coffee)
and drive like sh!t

Wait. Shouldn't Gen X'ers be the kids of Baby Boomers? I know I am.
Millennials are late Boomers/early Gen X'ers...see Cleets...kids.
My oldest was born 2.5 months before 9/11.

My parents are sort of crossovers, born in 1945. They get a little peeved when I call them boomers or hippies because they graduated high school in the early 60s and were gainfully employed by the time the flower children emerged.
