The Senate overwhelmingly passed a $602 billion defense bill Tuesday that included an amendment that would require women to register for the draft -- also known as the selective service -- for the first time in history.
The National Defense Authorization Act passed 85-13, although some Republican senators protested against the inclusion of the provision pertaining to women and the draft.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, slammed the measure last week during a Senate session, calling it "a radical departure" from American history.
"The idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat to my mind makes little or no sense," he said.
But it's ok to forcibly conscript men?
It's not law yet, the bill has to be reconciled with the House.

Yes. But when your mere existence is threatened constantly by your neighbors on a daily basis, you can use all the help you can get.
I doubt America has a similar problem.

Yes, but contrary to popular belief, Israel does not place women in combat arms units (infantry, armor, field artillery, etc.).
Of course, anywhere in Israel is a potential combat zone.

I'm all for women in the country having to sign up and face the potential of conscription. Women are increasingly finding themselves in combat roles and this is their country as much as its yours and mine.
Btw, Israel has the right idea with the mandatory conscription for 30 months.
