Brexit Thread

Post by Pwns »

Well, this has sort of fallen out of the news with the shooting, but we're under two weeks away from this vote and it could have implications that reach the US. Sure it could cause some turbulence in the markets but Europe is just too heterogeneous for the EU to really work and it's probably time to just dissolve the whole thing. Hopefully Sweden will also leave after Britain and the whole thing will come to the ground in an orderly and steady fashion.

Same here. The Sun put out an Op-Ed advocating the Exit. Not bad.

Anyone have a primer on the possible consequences of Brexit?

Well, you could see a reprise of the whole Scotland independence thing. Most Scots adore the EU and the way it's run, while the English are the real ones advocating the Brexit.

The Scots are the biggest "free stuff" advocates in the UK. Bernie would win big over there.

There are similarities and differences between Britain leaving the EU and Scotland leaving GB, sure. But I think the trend and current upheavals are in favor of the "Leave" movement.

There's this: http://money.cnn.com/2016/06/14/news/br ... index.html
Summary: Scientists wish to remain b/c they fear they could lose access to technology and money.

Btw, here's a great primer: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-32810887
Why do they want the UK to leave?
They believe Britain is being held back by the EU, which they say imposes too many rules on business and charges billions of pounds a year in membership fees for little in return. They also want Britain to take back full control of its borders and reduce the number of people coming here to live and/or work. One of the main principles of EU membership is "free movement", which means you don't need to get a visa to go and live in another EU country. They also object to the idea of "ever closer union" and what they see as moves towards the creation of a "United States of Europe"
Why do they want the UK to stay?
Those campaigning for Britain to stay in the EU say it gets a big boost from membership - it makes selling things to other EU countries easier and, they argue, the flow of immigrants, most of whom are young and keen to work, fuels economic growth and helps pay for public services. They also believe Britain's status in the world would be damaged by leaving and that we are more secure as part of the 28 nation club, rather than going it alone.

I'm not sure if I'm more concerned that Donald Trump wasn't familiar with a portmanteau or if the author of that article really thought the European Union was created right after WWII. He's only off by about 48 years.

He's probably including their membership in the EEC, created in 1957 and incorporated into the EU.

Trump is still giving Britain the cold shoulder after the Scots stone walled him on building a golf resort there. They also tried to ban him.

Trump is not burdened with the trifles of "information"
He speaks loudly for those who don't know sh!t and are very VERY proud to say so

Now I'm not saying that's a bad thing - everybody needs an advocate

Luckily for Trump he's also captured a HUGE percentage of people
that are just tired of professional Politicians
and they see him as certainly "no worse" than the present status quo

and honestly I'm not convinced they're wrong

There were and still are
probably 100 actors that can do any variety of southern accent perfectly
and this guy - who is just awful and always has been - gets the nod....

even Val Kilmer would have done a WAY better job

Meh. It was a bad movie altogether. No need to blame it all on him.

What did you think about Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins? That movie won an Oscar!

In the UK?

Try in all of Europe. The gene that dictates self determination completely departed Scotland in the 1740s.

What was left over was the chambermaids and runts.

but I'm not there yet

Maybe one or two more "talking down to's" or tsk tsks from the current President and I'll be there

Fair enough,
but why be an actor and suck at it..?

Dick Van Dyke is good at a few things
but frankly he should be shot for that performance - by a 410 loaded with slugs

Not burdened with the trifles of, "information."

You could be speaking directly about Hillary supporters.

How many Hillary supporters know about, or acknowledge, her actions in Syria and Libya that resulted in power vacuums that allowed extremists to thrive? How many Hillary supporters know that she supplied a record number of weapons to countries with the worst human rights records? How many Hillary supporters know Hillary supporters started the Birther movement...and that Hillary seemed to carefully avoid a direct slam down of those rumors? :suspicious:

Actually, what is worse...not knowing, or knowing and refusing any acknowledgement of the existence of such things? One can be easily corrected by getting additional information...the other can't be corrected at all.
