As soon as I finished reading this lengthy Salon piece, I thought of the Sage of the Palouse. Enjoy, and comment.

I read that this morning. Not bad. I'll be interested to see publications like Salon coalesce around Hillary when she gets the nomination. They've done some unflattering pieces on her.

Crap. What was intended as a thought-provoking thread has turned into a tribute to gooeyducks.

You're going to have to work harder than that to provoke any deep thoughts with this crowd.

I think it's kind of incoherent. And I hope he's wrong in his prediction.

The neofascist reaction, the force behind Trump,
Why would anyone read beyond these opening seven words of the article?

Agreed. Libs (along with too many self important types on the right) have taken the Trump WAY too seriously. Salon has become clickbaity.

Yep. As soon as I read that opening sentence I knew it had to be garbage and read no further..

I'm confused...
So by the reactions above I get the feeling neofascism is bad..?
Because American Patriotism right now (today) is absolutely modern fascism
And I'm not entirely sure that bothers me...
I suppose we can spend a lot of energy trying to deny that's what it is - but why..?

WTF?
Fascism (and Neofascism...or whatever flavor of the month word people want to use to bend definitions) has a lot more to it than simply patriotism.
Wow, post of the year fail.

Wow, post of the year fail.

Fascism was strongly based in nationalism. Some of today's uber-patriots have a populist streak in them that rejects the coporatist side of fascism.
Labels are tricky.

Quite frankly, before reading this piece, I head never heard of Anis Shivani. Just another New Age social critic, for my money. The subtext of his piece is that, regardless of who wins the election -- and he obviously picks Trump -- "the market" will win in the long run. The globalist horse is out of the barn and cannot be contained. Trump voters are bound to be disappointed with this outcome, especially when they see that Trump won't be able to steer the USA (much less the world) back to the pre-Smoot Hawley days of 90 years ago, or even the more recent pre-EU days. NAFTA is a convenient "whipping boy," but repealing it in favor of protective tariffs won't give any of those people a job and will raise prices of consumer goods for everyone. The real challenge for the next President is to figure out how to equip (and train) current and future generations for this reality. No easy solutions here.
On a lighter note, I LOL'ed at "embeddedness."

I'll sum this up for the low brained CS.er's here...

I love how Smoot-Hawley has become the Saul Alinksy for you and Ganny.
Bottom line, we've traded our manufacturing jobs for cheap consumer goods and greater government dependency to buy those goods. The people who decided that swap are VERY pleased with the arrangement! What fantastic deal!

So, what's your solution, smart guy? Public financing of elections?
Oh, and Alinsky sucks, too.

Honestly
I'm more of a fascist than a Patriot but the line get pretty blurry these days...
I know republicans are terrified of the word fascist but love the word Patriot
