While I was getting ready for work today half watching TV I saw a report on how Republican voters, by a wide margin, think Donald Trump represents the Republicans' best chance to win the general election. I could not believe it. Until then I'd thought that they realized he's not but were supporting him anyway.

I looked up the Real Clear Politics averages. Trump ranks 6th among Republicans in terms of how they fare against Clinton behind Rubio, Cruz, Carson, Christie, and Bush. He ranks 7th in terms of how they fare against Sanders behind Rubio, Carson, Fiorina, Christie, Bush, and Cruz.

I don't think that's the same poll I saw results of this morning, but the principle is the same:

The disconnect between who Republican voters think their strongest nominee is and who their strongest nominee actually is (probably Rubio) is striking. And, it's yet more evidence that (1) voters believe what they want to believe, facts be damned, and (2) voters aren't strategic in the way that members of the permanent political class are.

I'll say it again: By supporting Trump...who isn't even really a Republican...Republican voters are committing suicide. They are squandering what was, going in, a real chance to end up with control of both the Presidency and both Houses of Congress. By supporting Trump they're switching that to a situation in which they are likely to lose their chance at the Presidency and also lose control of the Senate. What a bunch of idiots.

Sadly I can't disagree with you. But that doesn't mean that the idiot factor isn't even more important on the Democrat side.

Here's where you are, as usual, wrong: The Republican Party is already dead politically and a planet-wide laughingstock to boot - everybody but your crowd knows that these miserable excuses for candidates don't even fool the conk wackjob base- which is why an outsider like Trump is polling better than any four of them and why Sanders will kick a mud hole in Trump's ass and stomp it dry. Like most conservatives your world view is filtered through the fear of just about everything and prevents you from realizing how much different you are from the vast majority of real Americans.

Voting for who you the establishment thinks has the best shot at winning from YOUR party is part of the problem.

To be honest, I am not sure why the GOP base is falling in with Trump, but the best I can come up with is they are tired of the establishment politicians and are taking a "burn it down" attitude.. this is probably the next step in what we will eventually identify as a natural political progression

Mainstream, then the absolutists (Tea Party), then burn it down.

That said, I also suspect that there are some of the old GOP base falling in behind Sanders, who is also a "burn it down" option, as well.

But he's pretty close. Let's face it, both Bernie and Trump are riding huge waves of populism and anger against the establishment - they are two sides of the same coin. Both have a lot of crazy ideas that, even if they are elected, they will probably be unable to do any of them. And both could very well be one-termers - Bernie because of his age, Trump because every one of his ventures goes bottoms up eventually. We're in an era of Absurdism (I'm coining that term) - the absurd is what people are gravitating towards - Trump on the right and Sanders on the left. If people weren't so fed up with same old politics as practiced by Bush and Clinton and Obama and others then candidates like Trump and Sanders wouldn't see the light of day. As it is, they both have very decent chances to be their party's nominees.

And yes, houndawg is always at his most silliest when he tries to roll out the tripe that the Republican party is no longer viable, in spite of the almost historical level of domination the GOP has had in any political office outside of the White House. I think he sees what he wants to see, whether it matches reality or not.
