A 3-year-old South Carolina boy shot himself to death in his mother's bedroom on Sunday afternoon, police said Monday.
Savion Barrow was at home in Rock Hill, S.C., when he fired the semi-automatic handgun at himself, Rock Hill Police Department spokesman Mark Bollinger told NBC News.
Barrow was taken to Piedmont Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, NBC affiliate WCNC reported.
Barrow's mother, who was not identified, told police that she was in the bedroom watching television when she heard the gunshot.
"She turned around, and there he was on the bed with the gun," Bollinger said.
Bollinger said detectives were still trying to determine where the gun had been and how the boy got it. The boy's father was not home at the time, and his 10-year-old sister was in another part of the house.
Bollinger said it was unclear if any criminal charges would be filed.
This is the second time in a little over a month that a Rock Hill toddler has pulled the trigger of a handgun.
On Oct. 11, a 2-year-old boy shot his grandmother in the back with a .357 revolver while the grandmother's sister — the boy's great-aunt — were driving the three of them.
The gun had been in a pouch behind the passenger seat of the car when the boy removed it and fired a bullet through the seat, striking his grandmother.
She recovered, but the aunt, who was the vehicle's registered owner, was charged with unlawful neglect, Bollinger said.
"I wasn't thinking," the aunt, who did not want to be identified, told WCNC, adding: "My sister could've died."
