Citing an imminent end of times, former presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann rounded out a recent tour of Israel by urging Jews to convert to Christianity.

Mrs. Bachmann, a former congresswoman from Minnesota who campaigned for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, made the remarks last week on a radio program hosted by Tony Perkins, the founder of Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group.

“We recognize the shortness of the hour,” Bachmann said, “and that’s why we as a remnant want to be faithful in these days and do what it is that the Holy Spirit is speaking to each one of us, to be faithful in the Kingdom and to help bring in as many as we can — even among the Jews — share Jesus Christ with everyone that we possibly can because, again, He’s coming soon.”

First to report Bachmann’s call was Right Wing Watch, a project of People for the American Way, a church-state separation advocacy group.

"A statement like Ms. Bachmann’s should serve to remind Jews that missionizing is, unfortunately, alive and well, and that we must always be on the lookout for it," said Agudath Israel of America spokesman Rabbi Avi Shafran. "It also should be a reminder of the importance of Jewish education, since the surest defense against missionizing is authentic Jewish knowledge."

She's a Christian and she's proselytizing. 500 years ago that meant the iron Maiden but today it means nutty statements. I don't think Christianity is on the road to bloody extremism- quite the opposite - you've said so yourself.

When a Christian says "convert" it reminds me of when I was heading to Iraq in 2004 and an old high school friend dropped by my house and brought me a book about Paul on the road to Damascus. He knew I was agnostic and was genuinely afraid I was going to get myself killed without having done what I needed to do to see the bearded man in the sky. It was benign, friendly. I get that Jewish people, given their history, would find this insulting - but it isn't threatening.

When a Muslim says "convert", I think of something entirely different. I think of what the Zoroastrians are having to put up with right now, or any of the Syrian or Kurdish religious minorities are dealing with. The bible and the koran both make it clear that spreading the word is a duty, but the methods are completely different

I don't see any kind of dangerous thinking on the part of Bachman here- she's a nut but her evangelical version of Christianity is pretty harmless.
