Huh? YOU were the one who said liberals like Musk because he was "pissing off brick and mortar car dealers". So why do liberals like pissing off brick and mortar businesses?

For the record, I love what Musk is doing.

Frankly I don't know why skelly even brought up the rocket thing, as that's only intended to get a booster rocket safely back to earth, not people.

I think it was to show that private enterprise would handle the driverless car issue. My contention is that no company would be willing to take this on because of the liability issues. There WILL be accidents where civilians other than the car owner will lose their lives. Who would insure it?

Well, brick and mortar doesn't necessarily mean local. Walmart is brick and mortar.

Sure, but other than Carmax, most brick and mortar car dealers are local. Some have a few locations, but are still local. When was the last time you played in a golf outing that didn't have a local car dealer sponsor something? I personally know three car dealers. They are all local guys.

BTW Walmart employs a LOT of local people in areas where there aren't many other jobs. I'm sure you don't hate that too?

I find a couple things amusing though-

Liberals also love the idea of the competing space companies driving down costs

200 years from now they'll tax SpaceX into oblivion- pointing to launch pads in Cape Canaveral and saying "you didn't build that"

Have you already forgotten the outrage from conks when the Obama administration shut down the space shuttle program? Wait, of course you have.
No.

Because there wasn't any outrage over the ending of the shuttle program, which Obama didn't do.

Go check the internetz, get your hyperbole correct, and then get back to me.

Hint: the program Obama killed rhymes with "sponstellation"

In Spokane, I can think of at least 8 dealerships now owned by out of town companies and the the consolidation appears to be growing just like it has in many industries.

There are pros and cons to on-line sales versus dealerships. What caught liberal's attention (besides the renewable energy aspect) was that dealers were lobbying state legislatures and throwing around their influence to ban on-line sales. Neither sides should care for that type of corruption.

No need to re-hash the Walmart phenomenon. Let's just say that small towns and independently owned businesses are still suffering despite the influx of cheap goods.

The reality is that on-line sales aren't going anywhere and I don't think there's a sensible way to limit them. It's easy, fast and cheap, just like a Towson coed. I'm a rube when it comes to economics, but I do think it hurts the economy in general. Think of how many people are affected when a brick and mortar store doesn't exist because that good can be bought online. Land owner, builder, realtor, building supply, construction workers, retail clerks, supply transportation, etc..

Good points. Believe me, I still think there's something to be said for expert service, in person. Especially regarding products that require a proper fit. 8-)

It's a tough world, but those land owners, builders, realtors, etc will just have to find somewhere else where they can make a living off of a brick and mortar type store or they will have to put their skills to work doing something else entirely. If you don't adapt and innovate then someone else certainly will.

Not at all, I have no personal feelings to them as a group whatsoever. As a personal shopper, I like going to stores for certain things and I like online stores for other things. My comment was from an economic viewpoint, nothing else.

I guess my point was retail is a huge employer on so many fronts and online sales has taken away a LOT of those jobs. Once they're gone, I don't know how you get them back.

Gotta find something else to do. Like I said, it's a tough reality, but reality nonetheless. Can't keep jobs around for too long that aren't needed.

Within a generation, automobiles will be endowed with what’s known as Level 4 autonomy—full self-driving artificial intelligence for cars—which will not so much change the game as burn down the casino. Autonomy will make it possible for unmanned automobiles to be summoned, via app, to your location. And not just any passing tramp steamer, but exactly the vehicle you need for the occasion, cleaned and fueled, for as little or as long as you need (offers may vary in your state). When you’re done—poof!—it will go away.

You don’t pay for the car. You pay for the miles. And only the miles. It’s a whole new way to fly. Let’s start small. Need a pickup for three weekends a year but don’t want to pay for the other 49? Autonomy can make that happen easily without a visit to the dreaded U-Haul depot. Need a car to take mom to the doctor’s, or fetch a spouse from the airport? A decade hence, major auto makers and smaller players will be at each others’ throats for the privilege of sending consumers vehicles a la carte, for a one-way trip, an afternoon, a weekend, a month. These transactions will move through the glowing bowels of your monthly credit accounts, and you won’t even feel them.
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17
