I have a hybrid Civic and I wish I didn't. The mpg is only one side of the coin. Yeah, you save money, but you better put that money aside for the $3000 hybrid battery that will fail. Or you better put it aside to spend $2600 on fixing a part of the brake system, that on a normal car only costs a $100-$300. The upkeep and repair of the hybrid specific components is outrageous.
Oh, and the part is a known problem that affects millions of cars, but Honda will not issue a recall. I guess a problem with the brakes isn't a priority.

I have a ten minute commute (if I get off my lazy ass and walk). We'll only put around 6,000 miles a year on that and use it for carpooling to youth sports and EWU games removing other cars off the roads. I can afford to be green so blow me.HI54UNI wrote:Why do you hate the earth? I have some carbon credits I can sell you if you want to alleviate your liberal, er progressive, guilt.kalm wrote:

FTR, Cleets, you insufferable douche, I still have my 2005 dinged up, dented, don't give a fuck about how it looks (agree with you on that part) Tundra...which has had zero things go wrong with it.
This is the first new car for us in 6 years and as much as I hate to admit it, that vehicle is rad. Aside from being an unbelievably comfortable and quiet ride it also has wifi, I can turn the ignition on and control the doors with my iphone, side proximity warning lights on the rearviews, air conditioned seats to counterbalance the wife's blast-furnace settings, hidden compartment with electric door to hide weed in when we travel to barbaric states where it's still illegal. I would have just been happy with the bluetooth connection.

(Next purchase will be to restore an air cooled VW or an old truck as I venture further into mid-life crisis mode and work on growing a sweet mustache to go with my bucket hat and socks with sandals. At least the kids will finally understand the rolling up the window gesture which has been lost to recent generations)

"Humans Are Slamming Into Driverless Cars and Exposing a Key Flaw
The self-driving car, that cutting-edge creation that’s supposed to lead to a world without accidents, is achieving the exact opposite right now: The vehicles have racked up a crash rate double that of those with human drivers.
The glitch?
They obey the law all the time, as in, without exception. This may sound like the right way to program a robot to drive a car, but good luck trying to merge onto a chaotic, jam-packed highway with traffic flying along well above the speed limit. It tends not to work out well. As the accidents have piled up -- all minor scrape-ups for now -- the arguments among programmers at places like Google Inc. and Carnegie Mellon University are heating up: Should they teach the cars how to commit infractions from time to time to stay out of trouble?......"

Well yeah. Unless they can program the cars to act like humans then a mix of robot driven and human driven is never going to work.
