Hmmmm...what to do with $500 million

"Less than 48 hours after U.S. military's Central Command chief Gen. Lloyd Austin testified that there are only four or five American-trained Syrian rebels currently fighting in that country, the military said four more fighters have joined the effort in Syria.

The dissolution and, in some cases, disappearance of the first class of 54 fighters trained by the U.S. as part of a $500 million program has been widely criticized in the media and on the Hill.

Central Command spokesperson Colonel Pat Ryder on Friday gave a breakdown of all 54 fighters — acknowledging for the first time that more than half of them have left the program soon after receiving training and only 20 remain in the program.

Those fighters include:

Nine who are in Syria fighting and are receiving weapons, support, and a monetary stipend from the U.S. and coalition partners
Eleven are still in the program but not in Syria. The U.S. military will not say where they are, citing operational security
Fourteen are in Syria but have left the program and are fighting with other opposition groups
Eighteen are believed to be in Syria but their whereabouts are unknown
One is believed to be killed in action but the U.S. has no evidence to substantiate that
And one is in al-Nusra Front captivity
Ryder insists that all of the U.S.-supplied weaponry provided to these fighters is in control of a "moderate opposition group," but he would not provide the name of the group. He also did not elaborate on how the U.S. knows the equipment is accounted for when 18 of the fighters are not.

Asked whether any of these U.S.-trained fighters have joined any terror groups, Ryder said that to the best of his knowledge none of them have.

The U.S. military is conducting a broad review of the training program."

JFC, you can't make this stuff up. Who authorized $500 million for a rebel training program? :ohno:

Anyone still think Obama is any different than the rest of our so called leaders? :suspicious:

Cluck did you hear,Josh Earnest yesterday?

He said that the blame doesn't lie with the White House. It lies with Obama's critics who pressured him into this.

Even the NYT was a bit incredulous

Nothing is easier than getting money for military expenditures
Congress drums up money the Military says it doesn't even want

Lots of powerful people make lots of money from military
Yet taxation associated with military expenses are shared by all

When we "fix" that issue sincerely
that would be the EXACT day our military gets downsized

Until then we have to work with what we've got
and live with presidents who are a part of that exact same system (there will be no CHANGE)
No matter how loudly its announced - CHANGE is not coming

less than $10,000,000 per trainee. That's an efficient governmental program. :ohno: Not to mention how successful it is.

WHOOPS!

JFC, why does anyone believe anything our government says? :suspicious:

"The Pentagon has said that a group of US-trained Syrian fighters has handed over ammunition and equipment to al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's affiliate in the country, purportedly in exchange for safe passage.

The acknowledgement contrasted with earlier denials by the US defence department of reports that some fighters had either defected or handed over gear.

Ryder added that the pickup vehicles and ammunition represented about 25 percent of the equipment issued to the group by the US-led coalition.

The development is another embarrassing setback for the US effort to "train and equip" Syrian fighters to take on ISIL in Syria.

The $500m programme originally aimed to ready about 5,400 vetted fighters a year for three years but problems finding suitable candidates have seen only a tiny fraction getting trained.

The first graduates, who made up a group of 54 fighters, were attacked by Nusra in July and the Pentagon is still unsure what happened to them all, with at least one killed.

The second group, consisting of about 70 fighters, were sent back to Syria last weekend and reports began circulating on Twitter soon after that they had either defected or handed over equipment.

Last week, before the insertion of the new fighters, the US general overseeing efforts against ISIL drew gasps of disbelief from senior politicians when he told them only "four or five" US-trained rebels were on the ground fighting in Syria.

So we just inserted another 70 fighters into Syria last weekend, after the fine performance of the previously mentioned 54 fighters...and the new ones have already disappeared?

Bigger issue is: why do we keep trying to play one side against the other in the ME? Does anyone learn anything? Step back and let them all off each other.

But, there's money to be made.

Someone is getting $500 million dollars involved.

Or do what Russia is doing and actually SUPPORT the standing government against these fringe groups and then as the larger power force change after the fact.

Not sure why the Obama administration's strategy in these conflicts ALWAYS hinges on negotiating with these extremists groups on equal footing.

What are you talking about? This totally worked out for us in Cuba back in the 60s and in Afghanistan in the 80s. Don't forget our success in the 1950s when we provided money and material to the French for their troubles in Vietnam.

Those 3, recent, proxy wars have been monumental success. :ohno:
