There is a dubious new addition to the Forbes 2015 America’s Richest Families list. The Sackler family, which owns 100 percent of Purdue Pharma, amassed the 16th largest family fortune in the U.S., estimated to be worth $14 billion dollars.

What makes this distinction dubious is the fact that the Sackler’s built their fortune by peddling the highly addictive, and often deadly, opiate painkiller OxyContin as a supposedly non-addictive version of oxycodone, labeling it as “abuse resistant.”

I know little about Oxycontin, but if it is that horrible aren't the biggest offenders the people that continue to prescribe it.

But I agree the war on drugs has been lost and the white flag should be raised.

kalm, I'm not sure I follow your line of thinking. Legalizing cocaine and heroin will reduce the number of deaths caused by Oxycontin?

Well for starters:
HEROIN is legal - it's called Oxi - and all you need to be is fat with back pain to get it
so 1/3 of America qualifies right out of the gate

The bigger issue here is how slowly the medical community changes their practice with new research and findings from the scientific community. Example: There's no evidence that mammograms improve cancer mortality, yet many practices still persist with it. It's not the drug companies that choose which prescription patients will get. I would bet you most doctors have even glanced at literature on the rates of side effects from various analgesics and pain-killers.

Of course these people are obviously very much opposed to marijuana legalization, but luckily they don't have to invest too much to fight that with police unions and private prison operators helping them out.
