Anti Stereotyping

I think most of us have seen it. When you look at TV commercials they go out of their way to go opposite of stereotypes. Like all of the criminals you see are White. If there's a depiction of home burglary, invasion, or whatever it's always a White male. Even if it's something like identity theft it's always White people. They absolutely do not depict Black people as committing crimes in commercials. Other stuff.
Now comes this:

What makes that interesting is that if you look at race/sex combinations, Black Females are the worst at math and Asian Males are the best. A manifestation of that can be seen in the results of the most recent (2013) National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 12th grade math test. Here's how it went by race/sex combination:
Is it coincidence that the ad depicts a scenario that is exactly the opposite of what is likely? I mean they depict a Black female as kind of the star of the Advanced Placement Calculus class and depict an Asian male as "outdone" by her?
I don't think so. What do you think the motivation for this kind of thing is?

I have been chuckling over the "I like to bake" comment at the end of this one.

Selling back-to-school supplies.
You've never thought this hard about an Office Depot commercial before. Nor have you spread around an Office Depot commercial before (I'm assuming).
So, seems to be fairly effective!

Think about it from the perspective of a business. White people are the least likely to get offended to the point that it will hurt your business. And if you have a non-Asian minority cast as a smart character then you might be seen as enlightened and it might help your business even if a little bit.
There's no agenda other than the bottom line. Claiming the advertiser has a PC agenda is sort of like feminists complaining toy commercials push sexist stereotypes.

One of the astronauts blown up in that last shuttle disaster was from Cheney and he was black. They named a state highway and a local grade school after him. Probably didn't even check his NAACP math test scores either. If he was white it would have been a dirt road and a playground.
Suckers.

Its a thinly-veiled jab at the white-devil slave-master, straight from the White House..

Oh no I didn't say so but I think you're right to some extent. But in this case why show the Asian Male looking "defeated?" Is that also calculated to result in a net sales increase?
I think I know why I've seen many things I've seen. Like I think if companies show somebody doing something like burglarizing a house they have to worry about people attacking them for stereotyping Blacks.
But is this commercial actually aimed in part at exploiting a resentment towards Asians for being good at quantitative things? I mean, they could just have easily have just showed the Black girl raising her hand. They didn't have to show the Asian buy looking "defeated."

So maybe that Asian gut is pissed off that the Black chick will probably get the answer wrong, but she will still get into Harvard ahead of him.

in 90% of all commercials the white male is the rube.

Let me see a commercial with an Asian chick winning a NASCAR race, then I might agree.

I have posted before about how both popular entertainment and television advertising appear to reflect an egalitarian fantasy. And it's been quite some time since the first time I did that.

Thats how it is when you're the top dog. You have to listen to the underdogs make fun of you. Small price to pay I think.

Probably because 90% of rubes are white males.

No, I live in a culture in which an egalitarian dogma associated with an egalitarian delusion has taken firm hold. And so do you. You just apparently don't realize it.

JSO, you're pissed off about a Home Depot commercial portraying a black student as smart.
Fucking relax.

This weekend, Saturday Night Live regular Kenan Thompson did a Weekend Update bit as "Corey," "the one black guy in every commercial."
Corey's life consists playing drums at Venice Beach, DJing, and partying with "Hispanic girls with bangs and thrift-store outfits, and white guys who dance while wearing fedoras!"
He also notes, "This year I was in 14 commercials and I was also the one black guy in a college brochure!"

You know of course that it is true that there is a tendency to make the White guy the stupid and/or uncertain one in commercials. I suspect that's because it is the "safest thing to do in today's politically correct culture.

JSO and other anti-PC folks sure do sound like whiny little bitches when it comes to white men's issues.
Y'all would be as bad as the people that annoy you so much if you had more of an opportunity to be.
