So does anyone here think this is really going to do any good when your higher ed consumers are a bunch of financially-illiterate 17 and 18 year olds with huge credit lines with the government who want amenities and want recognized names to go on their resumes?

It seems like all this is really going to do give the schools a green light for even more overhead. Maybe they can use the extra state support here to attract students if they add a Multicultural Rainforest White Guilt Literature Studies Degree?

I'm going to call it right now, this will turn into a perfect case study of how you can't spend your way to more affordable college.

I'm hoping Maryland jacks their tuition through the roof in the next several years. I did the prepaid program for both my kids when they were 5 and 3 where I get the average in-state tution back each year, even if they go to private schools. Then the state decided to freeze tuition for several years.

I think it's great that tuition declined in that State. However, I have thought for years that there is a real need to totally re visit the higher education models and ask ourselves if there aren't better models that would achieve results that are at least as good at much lower cost. For some reason nobody ever questions what academia is doing. I don't know why people don't question them about what they're charging and what is really necessary. We talk about all kinds of businesses and entities and how much they charge but for some reason higher education always gets a pass.

Let's say someone wants to be an electrical engineer and get a degree that says they are adequately prepared to be an entry level electrical engineer. I am totally convinced that a lot of the fluff could be cut away and if someone just focused on "what does it take to prepare someone to be an electrical engineer?" they could come up with a far more cost effective means of doing it than our higher education system applies now. And I think that's the case with just about any profession you can think of.

To me we're letting people in the higher education establishment get by with murder in terms of what they charge for their product and in terms of scrutiny with respect to the way they do things.

Because we've pumped government money into the system in a vain attempt to make it more affordable (funny how colleges, even the "not for profit" ones, seem to like taking in that money while raising costs), and because it's a captive market - we've told people time and time again that without college you are doomed to a lesser life. Classic inelastic demand. We want it at any cost, and the colleges are just doing what comes natural then.
