The ‘Southern Avenger’ Repents: I Was Wrong About the Confederate Flag

States’ rights? Heritage? I was wrong: The Confederate flag has always been about race.

As a Charleston, South Carolina-based conservative radio personality known as the “Southern Avenger,” I spent a decade defending the Confederate flag that is yet again the center of so much controversy.

I said the flag was about states’ rights. I said it stood for self-determination. I said it honored heritage.

I argued the Confederate flag wasn’t about race. I believed it. Millions of well-meaning Southerners believe it too.

I was wrong. That flag is always about race. Whatever political or historical points the flag’s defenders make, there will never be a time—and never has been a time—in which millions of Americans have looked at that symbol and not seen hatred.

Jack is an interesting person. I think he severed his ties with Rand Paul, but those two used to be thick as thieves.

I knew him tangentially back when he had his spot on 96WAVE (best radio station ever)

He was actually on Paul's staff but they had to let him go when some oppo research turned up some of his writings and called him out as a neo-Confederate. Not sure what his exact staffer role was

I still tell people about it. Their programming was top notch, the DJs were all great, the local band airplay (we actually did a live acoustic in the studio for Locals Only) everything about it was awesome. 96 WaveFest also became pretty epic

I grew up going to Wavefest. I remember skipping out on an SAT review class to go to WaveFest in 2000 (1999?) They had the best programming. When they moved it to The Joe, my parents house was across the river from it and I used to go up on the roof and listen to the bands. I think the last year was 2004, right?


I wondered what happened to Stupid Mike.

Driving through NC, VA and MD this weekend... I've never seen so many Confederate flags flying.
