MINNEAPOLIS — A field trip to an adult novelty shop without consent has caused some parents to pull their children out of a Minnesota school.

“We feel that the bond of trust between parent and educator has been irrevocably damaged.”According to WCCO, students from Gaia Democratic School went to Smitten Kitten for a field trip following a month-long sex education class.

The K-12 private school has about 25 students, but now has three fewer after angry parents took them out of the school.

Parents who say they were not notified are questioning the school’s administration over the trip.

In a letter to the school’s principal, one parent said, “We feel that the bond of trust between parent and educator has been irrevocably damaged.”

The owner of Smitten Kitten said in a statement that the store is an educational resource about sex and sexuality for the community.

Matt Hern, director of the Purple Thistle Centre, an alternative to school project in Vancouver, British Columbia, described nine characteristics of democratic schools in his book Field Day: non-compulsory academics, democratic self-government, self-regulation, non-graded evaluations, non-compulsory attendance, focus on emotional/social development, non-hierarchy of activities, broad interpretations of learning, and the importance of play (pp. 177-178).

I knew Evergreen was a good school but I just looked up its wiki page and it's regarded as one of the best public schools in the west. It also counts Matt Groening, Carry Brownstein, and Mackenore among its alumni.
