Baltimore has decided to screw their cops...how long will they do their job under this policy???

Apparently, if an officer is found by his department and the court to be acting within the scope of his authority and in the performance of his duty, if they get sued civilly the department says “good luck with that?”

They have effectively created a police force that will now, no longer arrest anybody...
I mean, why would you..?

Only 28 murders so far in 2018. Well below average, but then again, so has the temperature.

That was always the case in my old department

In fact, that is the norm in most places

And even in jurisdictions that provide you their attorneys, those attorneys are simply trying to get the city dropped from the suit

This policy applies only to punitive damages, not to actual economic damages. It may actually be sensible. Why should the City pay for malicious overkill by rogue cops?

Bad Baltimore Cops don’t help..,
A Baltimore jury has found two police officers guilty for their role in a sprawling police corruption case that involved robbing city residents.
Daniel Hersl and Marcus Taylor were convicted of racketeering and robbery charges and cleared of others.
They were part of an elite unit tasked with seizing illegal firearms. But instead the squad went rogue, stealing cash and guns and reselling drugs.

2 Baltimore detectives convicted of racketeering, robbery

Two Baltimore police detectives were convicted of robbery, racketeering, and conspiracy Monday in a trial that's part of an ongoing federal investigation into corruption among rogue members of the city's beleaguered police force.

After the jury foreman read the verdict following two days of deliberations, Detectives Daniel Hersl and Marcus Taylor were shackled and led out of U.S. District Court in Baltimore. Some of Hersl's relatives burst into tears, while one of his victims called out: "Justice."

The two detectives were each convicted of racketeering conspiracy, racketeering and robbery under the federal Hobbs Act, which prohibits interference with interstate commerce. They face up to 20 years on each count, for a total of 60 years.

On Monday evening, acting U.S. Attorney Stephen Schenning said he was hopeful that the police corruption case "will begin a long difficult process of examining how" the Baltimore force polices its own.

"We hope that police officers live up to the honor and privilege of the badge," Schenning said on the courthouse steps.

The trial was dominated by four ex-detectives who testified that the police department's elite Gun Trace Task Force was actually made up of thugs with badges who stole cash, resold looted narcotics and lied under oath to cover their tracks. They detailed acts of astonishing police criminality, including armed home invasions, stretching back to 2008.

Baltimore can’t account for how millions of federal grants were spent...

But they found $100k to bus students and pay for tee shirts for Saturday’s anti-gun March in Washington...

Last week:
“The West Baltimore teen’s crime spree began in December, prosecutors say, and, over the subsequent months, he stole four cars, skipped court dates and escaped from a juvenile center.

When a Baltimore County police officer confronted him Monday, 16-year-old Dawnta Harris ducked down and accelerated a stolen Jeep, running over Officer Amy Caprio as she opened fire, prosecutors say.

Caprio, 29, became the first Baltimore County policewoman killed in the line of duty. Condolences poured in Tuesday from across Maryland. Grieving officers crowded a courtroom in Towson for the first appearance of her alleged killer.

In a yellow jumpsuit, the slight teen appeared by video from the county jail for a bail review beside his public defender.

“In the last six months, no offense, but your client is a one-man crime wave,” District Judge Sally Chester said. “I’m not certain any juvenile facility is secure enough to hold him.”

The teen spoke softly, answering the judge’s questions. He made no other statements. Chester ordered him held without bail.

Dawnta Anthony Harris, who was arrested nearby shortly after the incident, is charged as an adult with first-degree murder. He faces life in prison and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next month in Baltimore County District Court.

“I will tell you, judge. He did in fact confess,” prosecutor William Bickel said.

The teen and three other youths were stealing jewelry and cash from homes in Perry Hall when Caprio confronted Harris, police said.

The three eluded a massive manhunt Monday afternoon and evening but were arrested later at their homes in West Baltimore. Charges are pending against the three, said police, who have not identified them....”

I bet ‘Dawnta’ is just a misunderstood youth with a hard upbringing who is a good boy..

Shocking! You mean to tell me that pavement, concrete, and city drains can’t accomodate eight inches of rain in three hours?

Maryland should raise taxes so they can pay for adequate infrastructure. :coffee:

Exactly. That’s why I stick to Delaware Bay crabs. The chemicals and biomedical waste from New Jersey gives them a distinguishable saltiness that is to die for.

No, its what you have liability insurance for

3/4ths of cops in the entire country have always paid for their own - and get better representation

public service unions are poison

and I never would trust my employer's attorney to have my interests in mind

EC is in Howard County right across the Patpsco from Catonsville, Baltimore County. We had 10.6" compared to EC's 8" Only we are at the top of the hill, Old Town EC is at the rivers edge.

It's unfortunate, it was a fun place to visit. The recent subdivisions at the top of the ridge in EC are the cause of this. Water goes down hill always.
