Officials with the Crane Independent School District are meeting to discuss their sex education program after nearly two dozen cases of Chlamydia were reported among the high school student body.

KOSA-TV reported the Crane Independent School District sent a letter to parents last week regarding 20 cases of chlamydia among the Crane High School student population, which totals about 300 students.

Those letters were sent to the parents of both senior and junior students as a precaution. The Texas Department of State Health Services notified both Crane and Upton County officials after a significant numbers of cases were identified.

The high school has three days of sex education in the fall semester for students, with the curriculum including abstinence. Crane ISD Superintendent Jim T. Rumage cited abstinence as a useful methodology for keeping kids away from sexual activity in a phone interview Monday.

“If kids are not having any sexual activity, they can’t get this disease … That’s not a bad program,” Rumage said.

It should be - but not as the only sex-ed option. They need to acknowledge that at least 50% of high schoolers are not virgins.

I don't disagree. The article just said "which included". Not only option.

I"m fine with them being accurate. I have no problem with them talking about, say, condoms as reducing the risk of VD as long as they're honest about it. The truth about it is that in practice condoms reduce the risk by about a factor of 10. So like if you have sex with someone with a VD that has about a 50% transmission rate you reduce that's reduced to about a 5% transmission rate if you wear a condom.

And honestly tell them that, gee, if you don't have the sex at all the chance is 0%.

My problem with what I see in people promoting "safe sex" while having sex is that I think it creates the impression of 0 risk when that doesn't exist. Or they'll talk about things like how effective condoms are if you do everything perfectly in using them every time as though that's a realistic possibility when it's not.

That sort of thing.

I don't get why this is a story. The school district has a 3 day course in sex ed, and they mention abstinence during the course. Any sex ed course in America is going to at least mention abstinence. As long as it's not exclusively abstinence, and clearly they talk about other things, why is this a story?

Quite a big reach and strawman, there, Einstein  Angry, much?

You're really good at massive false-equivalencies, too, AZ.
Maybe your propaganda masters would have been better served to choose someone other than an unmarried teenage mother as their "Ambassador of Abstinence"

It was so stupid and hypocritical ... feel free to rant your ass off when people make fun of it.

We'll laugh at that, too.

Who better to be an "Ambassador for Abstinence" than someone who learned the hard way that its really not worth it?

I think they need to add one more section to their sex ed class:
Chlamydia is not a flower.

The "evolved" christian adults in this town are the ones in dire need of non-abstinence sex education.

Wow! They're considering teaching the kids about STDs.

Liberal propaganda entering our schools. :ohno:
A small high school in west Texas is changing their sex-ed curriculum after a chlamydia outbreak. Crane High School says about 20 students have the sexually transmitted disease.

The CDC calls it, "epidemic proportions."

Monday, school district officials met to discuss their 3-day course on abstinence. They now want to include a discussion on the risks of STDs.

Last week the school sent letters home to parents, letting them know about the problem. “We do have an abstinence curriculum, and that evidently ain't working,” says Jim Rumage, Crane Independent School District Superintendent.

“We need to do all we can, although it’s the parents' responsibility to educate their kids on sexual education.” The school board will vote May 19th on the changes to the sex-ed curriculum.

I'd forgotten about that song. That's a good song. I need to put that on my Ipod. Yes I now that Ipods are virtually obsolete. But I still use mine.
