I could probably look into it some and challenge a number of those premises but the easiest one to challenge is that Oregon has a better education system than Texas does. That's because scientific samples of Texas students do better than scientific samples of Oregon students do on US Department of Education National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests in spite of the fact that Texas is demographically "disadvantaged" as compared to Oregon.

For example: In the 2013 NAEP 8th grade math test, the sample of Texas students averaged 288 while the sample of Oregon Students averaged 284. And the advantage gets bigger when you try to compare apples to apples demographically. Like White Texas students outscored White Oregon students, on average, by 300 to 290. And in the most "disadvantaged" group such that there were enough in the samples for both States to report average scores, Texas hispanic students of parents who did not finish high school and who were eligible for the school lunch program outscored their Oregon counterparts on average by 277 to 263.

So, no, Oregon does not have a better educational system than Texas does. But don't feel bad. From what I can tell in following these scores over the years no State does better than Texas does on those NAEP tests when demographics are taken into account. That's why I knew the "Oregon has a better education system than Texas does" assertion would be very easy to refute.

Another thing you have to be cognizant of when you're talking about something like "standard of living" is "cost of living." For example: According to the cost of living calculator at http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/cost-of-living/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, if you make $50,000 per year in Houston Texas and were thinking of moving to Portland, Oregon, you'd have to make $63,157 in Portland to maintain your standard of living. That's a huge difference. You'd need a 26% increase in income to have the standard of living in Portland that you have in Houston.

Coming from someone whose sole time in Texas was.a two hour layover in DFW enroute to Disney Orlando.

I will say that though I've only been to Portland once I did think it's a nice, clean looking city while I was there. Of course I didn't cover a lot of ground but just in walking around within a few blocks of my hotel it was a very nice city. And I do not like Houston in terms of how it looks and feels. The general atmosphere.

Texas, overall, has a lot of cool stuff though. A lot of desolate stuff. A lot of ugly stuff. But also a lot of cool and neat looking stuff. Another thing: Texas women tend to be have nice personalities. Unpretentious and easy going. Tend to be good looking too. At least that was my experience in going to a school in Louisiana near the border with Texas that a lot of Texas women attended.

Not enough to get him into Yale without being a legacy but certainly indicative of an IQ well above average. In fact if you estimate his IQ based on the version of the SAT he took it's about 129. Bush took the SAT pre 1974, had a math score of 640, and a verbal score of 566. You can find other calculators and charts that will give you the same estimate or close to it.

If one persists in calling Bush "stupid" or "dumb" in the face of known evidence to the contrary they're just clinging to a myth.

I would love to be able to find Obama's SAT score and would not be surprised if it is lower than Bush's was in terms of percentile score.

I just responded to another post in which Louis Gohmert was called dumb. Obviously not the case. You're not going to be "dumb" and do what it takes to get accepted to Baylor Law School. If you see somebody who got accepted to Baylor Law School and graduate from it they're pretty self-evidently not dumb. Same for someone (Bush) who scored at the 93rd percentile on his SAT then went on to earn a Bachelors from Yale and a Masters from Harvard. Calling such people dumb is reflecting willful ignorance.

I think what happens is that Liberals, Progressives, whatever you want to call them tend to try to label people they don't agree with as stupid.
