LISBON, Portugal — "Greece is leaving behind catastrophic austerity," newly elected Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told a cheering crowd in Athens on Sunday night. "It leaves behind five years of humiliation and anguish.”

It's easy to understand why Greek voters gave Tsipras and his Coalition of the Radical Left party, also known as SYRIZA, such an emphatic victory in Sunday's election.

Their country has been the epicenter of the euro zone's debt crisis since 2009. Since then, Greeks have seen their economy shrink by a quarter. (Under Conks) Public services have crumbled, living standards plummeted, unemployment and poverty rates hit record levels.



Voters blame governments of the established conservative and center-left parties: first for creating the economic mess by secretly running up massive budget deficits and debt levels; then prolonging the agony through slavish adherence to austerity diktats imposed by the euro zone powers in Brussels, Frankfurt and Berlin.

Sounds like Conk-led America in 2009!!



SYRIZA campaigned on an offer of hope.

Tsipras — at 40, modern Greece's youngest leader — promises a break from the past by overturning austerity policies, challenging international creditors and relaunching the economy with TAXES FOR THE RICH, and new investment in jobs and services.

How sad. They apparently don't even realize that their own demand that government take care of everything is the reason for massive budget deficits and debt levels. They're in the fix they're in precisely because of the direction they're about to take again now.

Greece's problem is that they don't make or sell anything, in large enough quantities, that people want. Tourism only goes so far. So they have no real source of enough income but they want to spend lavishly beyond that. They didn't like austerity because they had to do without and live within their means, and now they have a government that is going to ignore that and spend whatever they want to spend to live the lifestyles they want to live. I mean, that philosphy worked so well before for Greece, what are the odds that is doesn't work this time?

Don't be silly. At least here in the US we actually have a credible GDP and we produce quite a lot in terms of goods and services. That doesn't change no matter who is in the White House. In Greece, the problem is that they don't really produce much in terms of goods and services. So when you can't make a lot or provide a lot, it makes it hard to have the generous government programs they were used to having, and what this new government is planning to reinstate. You can't get water from a stone and you can't expect lavish benefits when you don't make the money necessary to afford those benefits. Greece is screwed either way with whichever government it has as long as they produce as little as they do and expect as much as they expect.

We really should flag this thread. I wont be 18 months before it becomes high comedy

This new government is about to learn a harsh lesson about their national sovereignty.

Greece is like a teenage boy that doesn't think he should have a curfew because "he's not a child". He might make an empty threat of running away from home, but in the end he will angrily capitulate.

Spain could be next with socialist party being outflanked...on the left.

Austerity is hard and requires perseverance. In Greece, the voters gave austerity just enough time for them to become miserable but not enough time for it to work.

As GannonF points out, Greece is not a significant producer of goods and services. I don't see how spending their way out of a deficit "primes" their economy's production to the point that it spends itself out of a deficit, or to the point where its economy outgrows their deficit (as we are doing here).

Im actually pulling for Greece Spain Ireland and Portugal to blow up the EU... after the Euro implodes I can take my Tuscan vacations on the good ole dirt ass cheap lira.
