Ventura Residents Rally Around Homeless Veteran Lit on Fire at Beach Amid Search for Assailants

The life of a homeless man who suffered serious burns when he was doused in lighter fluid and set on fire as he slept on a Ventura beach over the weekend was saved by the quick-thinking actions of a passerby, who extinguished the flames before calling for help.

The unidentified man happened to be near Pierpont Beach at South Seaward Avenue around 11 p.m. Sunday when 58-year-old John Frazier was attacked by three men, according to a news release from the Ventura Police Department. He dialed 911 after putting out the blaze.

Doug Kern walked by moments after the man used sand to put out the fire, which has engulfed Frazier in flames of up to 6-feet high.

Frazier was being treated USC Medical Center for second and third degree burns that covered up to 40 percent of his extremities and torso, according to police. He was expected to survive.

A motive has not been given for the attack.

Those who knew Frazier believed he was a veteran who moved from New Mexico about six months ago and had been staying at the beach ever since.

Curtis Schoefield, who said he often sat and spoke with Frazier on the beach, told KTLA the man was always flashing a peace sign.

“He never harmed nobody,” he said.



Since the attack occurred late Saturday, residents of the tight-knit beach community have rallied around Frazier, leaving messages and lighting candles on the beach in his honor.

The three assailants remained at large as of early Tuesday. Residents expressed their believe that arrests would be made in the case.

“We just want to get the little crooks who did this,” a male resident said, adding, “They’ll get him, we’ve got a good police department here.

Police described the wanted men as being in their late teens or early 20s and having shaved heads (They're Conks ), police said in a news release. They were seen wearing dark clothing (brown shirts with swastikas?).

A community meeting was also planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday, during which time the incident would be discussed.

Sure. It was a piece of information that was conspicuously missing from the Police description. It was the first thing that came to mind as what is probably known information that was omitted from the description.

Think about it. It's an important piece of information if you're trying to give people a mental picture of the people involved. It does provide higher resolution. If the police had said white guys with bald heads in their late teens or early 20s that presents a completely different picture than if they had said black or hispanic guys in their late teens or early 20s. You know that's true.

There's absolutely nothing unreasonable about asking about it.

Oh. Maybe it was dark or a fast occurring situation and the race was unclear? All ethnicities can sport a shaved head. Anyway, it wasn't the first thing I thought of. But that's just me.

They already know who did it.

If they don't say the assailant was white. It's assumed they are black here in Baltimore.

It's what I thought of in the context of the Capn' stating that they are "Conks." No, you can never know for sure. But if you were to make a mathematical model to estimate the probability that a randomly selected person would be "conservative" politically or not ethnicity would be an important factor in it. It'd be more important than, for instance, age. Knowing their ethnicity would have more predictive value than, for instance, knowing their general age group would.

Not at all. I worded it the way I did because it's important to make the distinction between the probability picture once something happens and the probability picture through which one makes distinctions.

Suppose you asked a Black guy if he voted in a Congressional election in 2014 and he says "yes." There is no probability associated with the Black guy you're talking to when it comes to who he voted for in the last Presidential election. He either voted for a Democrat or he did not. You could assume he voted for a Democrat and be wrong because he is one of the 13% of Black males who voted for a Republican.

But if you do that 1000 times and you go ahead and conclude each time that a Black guy who voted voted for a Democrat you're almost certainly going to be right more than 80 percent of the time. That's how it works.

At this point, Ventura police have no motive for the crime and a only a vague description of the suspects -- three white males in their late teens or early 20s with shaved heads and dark clothing.

Is it accurate to describe a black man as having a shaved head? I don't recall seeing it often.
