A Lakewood minister refused to hold a memorial service on Saturday for a mother of two at his church because the woman was gay, family and friends said Tuesday.

"Her casket was open, flowers laid out and hundreds of people sitting in the pews," supporters said in a Facebook post. "He collected money for the funeral and has yet to return it."

Vanessa Collier was 33 when she died on Dec. 29, leaving behind her wife and children.

"You will not find Jesus at New Hope but you will find hypocrisy," said a sign carried at a demonstration outside the church Tuesday by about four dozen family members and friends.

Dead people are dead people, the only difference is a dead gay wont tell you hes gay ad naseum and want special rights/laws.

That's right. If the Pastor has "conditions" which preempts the use of his facility, they should have been discussed PRIOR to agreeing to the facility's use. Dunno CO law, but whoever has legal standing for the deceased estate SHOULD sue the church.

Secondarily, less legal, assuming the Pastor's issue is that the deceased, having been gay, was a "sinner", is it his policy to refuse to allow "sinners" funerals at his church?

Guess that puts an end to funerals at his church.

Or maybe he has developed a "special sinner" classification for gays?

It wasn't much of an article. If this story is true, as it sits, the pastor should be fired. If these people didn't choose to tell the pastor what was planned and knew he would react like this for publicity and exposure. They should be ashamed of themselves.

For what I am gathering:

Deceased did not go to this church - but body was at the funeral home across the street. They wanted a church funeral - the funeral home has in the past referred people in similar circumstances to the church, since it was so close.

Minister was happy to do service (for a fee, of course). Everything was set, body displayed, etc. Minister then notes that in a display of pictures of the deceased, there was one of the couple together. He then realized they were a lesbian couple. He then said he could not do the funeral unless the pictures were removed, and any mention of her wife obliterated.
