I'm gonna lean this direction:
Daniel Wiener

I‘m going to cast my vote with the minority of commentators here who believe this is a satire. The biggest argument for that viewpoint is simply that it borders on insane for anyone to be writing it seriously, no matter how low our opinions may be of today‘s students or law schools or the legal profession in general.

When I write satires (or April Fools jokes) I usually put in several items which are so over-the-top as to prove that the satire can‘t be for real. There are hints of such things in this article, an example being the reference to "psychic effects". Sure it‘s possible that the author is simply ignorant of the meaning of "psychic", but the rest of the article demonstrates an excellent grasp of the English language.

Assuming this is a satire, it‘s a really excellent one. William Desmond has captured the essence of that subset of entitled hot-house students who put their delicate feelings above all rational thought. If and when Mr. Desmond admits that this is indeed satirical, he will have my applause. And I will believe him, based on the internal evidence such as I‘ve cited above.

But nice call on the comments:
"Mr. Desmond, I don‘t use the word ‘hero‘ very often... but you are the greatest hero in American history."

I know. I loved the awater cooler comment.

I am also open to the possibility that this is an EPIC troll.

(But it is a sad commentary that there is even a chance it might not be)

Although over the last few weeks many law students have experienced moments of total despair, minutes of inconsolable tears and hours of utter confusion

What kind of sissies are they grooming up there in the Ivy League?

Ever heard of Poe's Law, kalm?

Yeah, I'm not ruling out that this out as serious commentary.

Could you imagine any of us going into our bosses and saying

"I know I have an important deadline coming up that I have known about for months but I feel bad about something bad that happened in another part of the country to people I do not know so I need an extension."

I would hope my boss would give me a Gibbs slap on the back of the head (NCIS reference) at a minimum.

What a crock of shit. Ivytalk Steinmetz Schlump & Goldstein just pre-empted Mr. Desmond's employment application with a rejection letter. :coffee:

If this truly was a troll, I hope Desmond mailed a back dated letter to some media outlet saying so first. Otherwise any backpedal later will be just that.

I don't see how it could be anything but a troll. Sort of like "A Modest Proposal".

I mean, I like to make fun of the Ivy League just as much as everybody else, but to take this guy seriously you have to assume that a Harvard student has heard of St. Louis.

Been there several times, poundpud. Had a client there for whom I successfully tried a case. Saw McGwire hit a HR at Busch Stadium before he got busted for juicing. Friendly folks. Good bratwurst.

And then you have East St. Louis... :coffee:

My first thought was "this can't be serious" and I see others thought that as well.

It would be 100% troll if not for one thing:

Student proposals to postpone law exams at Harvard, Yale, and several other schools like Oberlin (in my second link) due to anguish over the recent grand jury rulings are very real. SOMEBODY on those campuses are taking this seriously.

Judging by the comments I think the kid is laughing his ass off at the way he got the old folk fired up... he might even mean some of it.
