President Barack Obama on Monday proposed new funding meant to help improve relations between police departments and minority communities, saying there is a "simmering distrust" between the two groups that extends well beyond the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.

The White House has asked for $263 million in funding for police body cameras and training in the wake of the shooting death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown.
Perfect, but why are you increasing funding? You already have grants for this technology. Educate the agencies, let them know that the US Government has already conducted survey's and are currently conducting and updated survey of body worn cameras and let's get these out. Now, I know many will say that their privacy is being violated. However, I don't think that's a concern. Unless something happens, the data isn't kept. If your traffic stop is normal and w/o conflict, it won't be kept after the court date.

This isn't rocket science. It's CYA.

The tech/defense industry has never met a trumped up crisis from which it could not make a profit at taxpayer expense. :ohno:

You can buy a lot of body cameras by foregoing the purchase of one of these:

Every city squad car is equipped today with a military-style assault rifle, and officers can don Kevlar helmets able to withstand incoming fire from battlefield-grade ammunition. And for that epic confrontation—if it ever occurs—officers can now summon a new $256,643 armored truck, complete with a rotating turret. For now, though, the menacing truck is used mostly for training and appearances at the annual city picnic, where it’s been parked near the children’s bounce house.

Isn't policing a community what cops are suppose to do?

Real Estate is the same way. I loved appraising homes in Wild Dunes, Dunes West, etc... Especially when it was for a divorce. Those wives were relentless!!

yes

except that Community Policing TM is as much about policing communities as Immigration Reform is about fixing immigration law

I've read today that some folks feel that cops wearing cameras will prevent incidents like Ferguson...

I predict a rise in sales of ski masks in urban areas.

Prevent riots? Unfortunately no. That portion of the population ( to include white apologists) will refute video evidence. The thing about these videos is that you can't tamper with them UNTIL you export a copy. Also, they don't maintain the video unless there was an incident which needs to be saved. Storage is expensive and there's no reason to maintain hours of video of by the book traffic stops, events, where nothing happened. I think the time frame for maintaining the files is 90 days.

Sales? Surely you meant thefts.
