I suppose it's possible that the young man came upon that thought process on his own. But, to me, there are just two many standard Liberal/Progressive talking points in it. I think what we are looking at is the result of the sometimes subtle and sometimes overt brainwashing that goes on in the United States educational establishment nowadays. Especially the Higher Education establishment.
Here is the crux of the author's response to being mugged at gun point:
Who am I to stand from my perch of privilege, surrounded by million-dollar homes and paying for a $60,000 education, to condemn these young men as “thugs?” It’s precisely this kind of “otherization” that fuels the problem.

Turn up your satire detector, son.
BTW, the comments are a good read. I especially liked this one…
Progressive thinking vs conservative thinking
The answer can be found by posing the following question:
You’re walking down a
deserted street with your wife
and two small children.
Suddenly, a Terrorist with a huge knife
comes around the corner,
locks eyes with you,
screams obscenities,
raises the knife, and charges at you…
You are carrying a
Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP, and you are an expert shot.
You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.
What do you do?
Progressive Answer:
* Well, that’s not enough information to answer the question!
* What is a Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP?
* Does the man look poor or oppressed?
* Is he really a terrorist? Am I guilty of profiling?
* Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?
* Could we run away?
* What does my wife think?
* What about the kids?
* Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?
* What does the law say about this situation?
* Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?
* Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?
* Is it possible he’d be happy with just killing me?
* Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?
* If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?
* Should I call 9-1-1?
* Why is this street so deserted?
* We need to raise taxes, have paint & weed day.
* Can we make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior?
* I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.
* This is all so confusing!
Conservative Answer:
Bang

Always a possibility, but I don't think so in this case. I think the young man is absolutely serious.

"Housemate."
Dude's gay.
And stupid.
His armed robbers should have shot him and his housemate...the world would be better off.

Do you not live in Washington State? If so you're going to have to explain that one.

"Housemate."
Dude's gay.
I dunno. I had a "room mate" when I was in college and we were definitely not homosexual. In fact that SOB screwed some girl I brought back home that I wanted to screw. And THAT was after some girl he brought back to screw sat on my lap and flirted with me and I turned her down then she hated me from then on. Then he got crabs from her so I'm glad I did the "right thing."
AND he once told me that if he got the chance to screw my current wife while I was dating her he would.
It's like my other friend who I was talking to on the phone one time. We were talking abut some girl and somehow during the conversation it became clear that she was not my girlfriend.
He said, "She's not your girlfriend?"
I said, "No."
He said, "Oh GOOD because I f*cked her!"
I'm thinking, "Well gee THANKS dude."
Ah...college days.

You probably think it rains a lot where I live too.
