The school will no longer use the terms "Freshman" or "Freshmen" for their underclassmen. They will use "1st Year" instead. Apparently the former terms are sexist.


UVA has not used Freshmen (or Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors) for as long as I know. They use 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Year, but the change had nothing to do with sexism.

First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year
Instead of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Why? To be a “senior” implies that a person has reached the final phase of learning, a feat that Mr. Jefferson believed impossible, arguing instead that education is a life-long process.

Has to do with snobism. Mrs is a UVA grad and heaven forbid you say "freshman" or "campus". It's "first year" and "grounds" and none of the students or alum are shy about correcting you. I make a point of using "campus" as much as I can.

I would always correct my UVA girlfriend at the time that she is a FRESHMAN or SOPHOMORE and no matter how hard you try, you are NOT IVY LEAGUE

Is this news? SuperCasey has been all over this for years now. That said, he might be applying for graduate degree work at Elon in the future.
