You know, I was thinking about the "shut down" thing today again. Thinking about how amazing it is that the Republicans did not shut the government down in 1995 nor did they shut it down in 2013. In 1995 the Republican Congress passed a spending bill and Bill Clinton vetoed it.

Absolutely no doubt about the objective truth: Bill Clinton shut down the government.

Similar thing happened in 2013. Republicans in the House passed a continuing resolution to fund the government and the Democrat controlled Senate killed it. Objectively, the Senate shut down the government.

Yet in both cases Republicans were perceived by the general public as "shutting down the government."

Just absolutely, objectively, false. Yet that was the public perception in both cases. Just amazing the way the Democrats were able to swing that.

You live in a fantasy world, St. Wronge.

Conks were outmaneuvered SOOOO embarrassingly. I even blush for the Conks when I think about them bending over for this!

They were certainly outmaneuvered in the 90's by Clinton - that was one of his masterstrokes and a good example of why he was such a good politician.

I don't think the same can be said of the one in 2013. The Republicans got what they basically wanted with the sequester and they won at the polls in the subsequent election in 2014. Sure, they took some bad press right at the moment, but they played a better long game than Obama did in that case. I think the Dems just forgot what worked for them in the shutdown in the '90's and didn't have someone with the political acumen that Clinton did this time around to make it work for them.

Reagan is simultaneously a Historical Religious leader and a nightmare
Depending on which conversation you're having
The one where you actually review his words and actions
or the one where you fantasize about his legend

Two distinctly different experiences

Partisan brinkmanship is the reason. Out of the 537 people running this Government, there are probably only a handful of people that actually want to do the right thing, regardless of party. We have a Congress and White House of petulant children.

Not to let facts get in the way of an internet meme, BUT...

Reagan wasn't a fan of granting amnesty to illegals, but he used it as a tool in a compromise with the Donk controlled Congress for border security measures. The problem is that the Donks in Congress didn't hold up their end of the bargain and didn't pass the required legislation to secure the border.

Not to mention that this action actually went through Congress and not unilateral blanket amnesty with the stroke of a pen from an ass clown. :tothehand:

Back to your regularly scheduled misinformation. :coffee:

I'm sure all his Central Valley AG buddies hated it too.

The Democratic Congress raised taxes 11 times, sold weapons to Iran, increased the deficit, and grew the size of the federal government. Poor Reagan, just along for the ride and never able to realize his visions ... :ohno:

Yep, to a large degree that's true. Boehner should have done to Obama what O'Neil and Rostenkowski did to Reagan. In response, Reagan could have taken "executive action" and watched as the Dems tried to impeach him.
