I have yet to watch a John Oliver video that wasn't funny. Usually worth the time. :thumb:

Sort of related, I got into a conversation about this a couple of weeks ago.
Without a doubt, one of the best commercials airing today is:

The commercial has two key ingredients:
1. It's funny/entertaining.
2. The catch phrase sticks with you AND has the name of the company. "Jake from State Farm" is mentioned 4 times and "State Farm" is mentioned at the end.

There are many commercials that are funny/entertaining but I could not tell you what the company/product is.
State Farm has done a good job with that in several other commercials. It's amazing how many commercials miss the mark.

Looking at their competitor Allstate, their slogan is "The Good Hands People". I'm sure a lot of people know the slogan, but I wonder how many can tie it to Allstate. Without "Allstate" in the slogan, it loses it's effectiveness.

Meh, having spent time in the A-B world, I have gained an appreciation for effective marketing. :coffee:

Agreed on the Jake from State Farm, but...

GEICO kicks everyone's ass in advertising.

That being said, advertising would never sway my decision to purchase insurance from a certain company. Price shopping would; but I have USAA so it doesn't much matter. I've had insurance companies call me before and when I mention I'm with USAA, they usually say "alrighty then, have a nice day". Occasionally they will ask what I pay before saying "alrighty then, have a nice day".

Interesting comment about Geico.

Frequency (saturation) of marketing is my key factor when deciding the success of a marketing campaign.

When I note a company airing ads every 10 min., that has billboards on every block, mailers in my box every week, pop up ads all over the internet, bus benches, sports facility sponsorship and embedded ads...

...all repeating they can "save me money"... :ohno:

Companies that waste vast percentages of operations on marketing CANNOT PROVIDE THEIR CUSTOMERS VALUE. Short term saturation for a marketing promotion is understandable, but 24/7-365 is ignorant.

I can think of a few companies I'll always avoid:

AT&T
Comcast (Xfinity)
Dish Network
Direct TV
GEICO
Progressive Ins.
Allstate
AAMCO
Liberty Mutual

...just to name a few.

Then again, I'm a value-based consumer. I could give a rats ass what cereal Brett Favre eats, or the brand of car George Clooney drives.

You're a "value based" consumer and you purchased a Harley Davidson...!!!!
That is NOT a value based product
An $8,000 Motorcycle sold for $20k is not "Value"

Some of the better slogans/phrases used in advertising that has company/product name in it:

It's Miller Time
I'll have a light. Bud Light.
Gee. No, GTE
Got Milk?
Fosters - Australian for Beer
Nothing runs like a Deere
When EF Hutton talks, people listen
Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids
Hey! How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?

 Wow. If you asked me who has the most annoying commercials... GEICO by 7,428 miles. From the cavemen to the lizard, to the hipster mandalin players... :ohno: I seriously wouldn't consider them for insurance beacuse I hate their advertising so much.

USAA is great for insurance, but their mortgages suck. I love when USAA members call me for a quote. :thumb:

USAA doesn't actually do mortgages. They simply patch you through to US Bank.

I didn't say I like everything they do; only that their advertising kicks everyone else's asses. You remember their ads, no? They win.

What GEICO is telling me is "we have so much money we're running 5 separate ad campaigns simultaneously"
but we'll make sure you get a good price on your insurance because advertising is cheap

:dunce:

I would agree for the most part, but you might want to shop out any homeowners insurance you have with them....they ain't so competitive in that arena, for some strange reason.

Mine was done through US Bank. Looking at their site, I see USAA also uses Green Tree, Ocwen, PHH, Dovenmuehle, and Wells Fargo.
