Middle School Assignment: Hitler vs. Bush

One D.C. middle school homework assignment goes a little something like this: Compare and contrast former President George W. Bush with Adolf Hitler.
On Tuesday, as McKinley Middle School students worked on a unit about war and peace, a teacher handed out a worksheet she created that said just that. The Northeast Washington students were told to turn the worksheet in Wednesday after finishing up readings about Hitler and Bush.

We have a Michigan school security refusing access to a U.S. soldier on a visit to his kids school...
...because he was wearing a U.S. military uniform which is "offensive"...

And four firefighters suspended for refusing to remove "offensive" American flags stickers from their helmets and lockers...

Ward Churchhill is still allowed to foul American soil with his presence...

Grade schools are suspending students who wear pro-2nd Amendment logo clothing (...I'm sure they'll be banning pro-1st Amendment messages soon)...

And this school teacher contrasting Hitler to Bush.
Fire the teacher.
Immediately.
...or allow all teachers to promote false ideology/revisionist propaganda.

Wow, way to overreact. All the teacher did was to hand out an assignment, sad to see that you are so threatened by the prospect of critical thinking. How small minded of you to think that censorship is a solution.

Hitler vs Obama would be a much more interesting assignment, but that would be racist.

You are correct.
AND...the teacher would have been fired immediately...

Alabama teacher has been suspended after a geometry lesson on the best angles to assassinate President Obama
An Alabama teacher has been suspended after a national outcry for using an assassination attempt against President Obama to illustrate a maths problem to his class.
Gregory Harrison, the teacher at Corner High School in Jefferson County, Alabama, was to receive a slap on the wrist in the form of a "long conversation" with the local school authorities, after sparking a Secret Service investigation when he discussed possible angles to use in shooting at the president.
But officials only later decided they needed to take tougher action against Harrison following a flood of calls from people outraged at the lenient treatment. Harrison's deadly lesson was revealed this week by the local newspaper, Birmingham News, which reported:
The teacher was apparÂently teaching his geometry students about parallel lines and angles, officials said. He used the example of where to stand and aim if shooting Obama.
"He was talking about angles and said, 'If you're in this building, you would need to take this angle to shoot the president,'" said Joseph Brown, a senior in the geometry class.
Another student said: "We were going over a test and getting reviewed for our finals and were going over tangency. A student walked in and said, 'Well, if you shoot the president...' and the teacher picked up on it and said, 'OK, if you shoot off his ear, that is a point of tangency.'"
District schools superintendent Phil Hammonds said Harrison had shown a lack of judgment and was now suspended pending further investigation. "As a district, we are embarrassed by his actions and what he said. There is nothing that can be said to rationalise what was said. We take this very seriously. There is no place in our society for a person to make these comments," Hammonds said.
Before the flood of complaints, however, Birmingham News reported that Hammonds's initial response was: "We are going to have a long conversation with him about what's appropriate."
The Secret Service confirmed that it investigated Harrison before the story was made public, saying: "We did not find a credible threat."
Malia Drummond, a student in Harrison's class during the lesson, defended him as an conscientious teacher who didn't deserve to be fired. She told Birmingham News: "Yeah, the comment was probably inappropriate, but who in America hasn't make a joke about Obama? They make it sound like he was plotting an assassination, but it wasn't like that."
I mean, its just an assignment right?

Mich. Teacher Suspended After Segregation Lesson
A southeast Michigan public school teacher has been removed from the classroom while district officials look into whether a lesson plan on African-American history and racial segregation laws was inappropriate.
Alan Barron was placed on paid leave nearly two weeks ago after an eighth-grade history class at Monroe Middle School was shown a video of how white entertainers once used black face paint to imitate blacks, according to The Monroe News.
An assistant principal sat in on the history class as Barron, 59, discussed Jim Crow laws and showed the video.
"Mr. Barron has been on leave ... while we look into a reported situation in his classroom," the district said this week in a statement. "Because this is a personnel matter that is going through the teacher-contract required steps, we cannot comment any further."
Barron also is supervisor of Monroe Township, about 35 miles southwest of Detroit. The Associated Press left a message seeking comment Saturday at a phone number listed for Barron, who is expected to retire this year after 36 years in the district.
As part of his suspension, Barron can't attend an annual banquet for retiring teachers or other district functions.
Adrienne Aaron, whose daughter is in Barron's class, said he simply was teaching history and that racial segregation is a subject that should be discussed with students.
"It had nothing to do with racism. History is history," Aaron told the newspaper. "We need to educate our kids to see how far we've come in America. How is that racism?
"It's so sad this has happened to him. He's one of the best teachers we've had."

I wouldn't have believed this one except that I had a recent experience that makes it a little more credible. There's a guy in my home county in NC who runs a historical society for the county. He has a facebook page where he posts minutiae about Caswell county. A few months ago, he put up a historical deed where a father had deeded some property to his son back in the 1820s or so. There was some land, some farming equipment, and a slave girl. Two or three people who follow the facebook page went completely ape sh1t, threatening the guy, saying he needed to be "wet up"- (shot)... really nasty stuff.
I and most people saw the post as having historical value, and the fact that a person could be traded as property alongside real estate and farming tools brought that reality alive. But the message sent by these people in essence was- "you're white and you aren't allowed to talk about these things"
I dont know how prevalent this is becoming but it was disturbing to say the least

Given that Obama's tendencies are toward Communism vice German National Socialism (two entirely different entities) AND the Nazi's treatment of people of African descent (IRRC, Hitler ignored Jesse Owens), even as a Conservative, I find the comparison of Obama to Hitler to be WAY off base....

hence the purpose of a Venn Diagram...
comparing ANY two historical figures can be considered off base. Because of the nature of their individual actions, political environment, societal norms at the time, etc.
My point being that people will always pick and choose what to get worked up over and what to let slide, this thread case in point.
the cult of personality that exists (or existed from 2008-2010) with Obama is on par with Hitler in 1930s Germany, that's once example that can be used.
FWIW, I could care less about the nature of this teacher's lesson plan or whatever underlying political motives he or she may have. But hypocrisy NEEDS to always be addressed.

Hmmm...I don't think I've ever seen anyone compare Obama to Hitler. No doubt if they did T'man would demand that they be fired, anything less would be hypocritical and you would have to get involved.

I'd like to know what the readings that the students were given said about Hitler and Bush before deciding whether this was an exercise in critical thinking or political propaganda. If critical thinking, then fine. If political propaganda, fire her sorry ass.
I'm also wondering how this fits into the mission of the school for science, mathematics and engineering.

These are the current people responsible for decisions at public schools, which is THE reason why our schools are unsafe and education is failing. Policy established by arrogant, myopic, academic-heavy liberals more concerned with political indoctrination than education.

There is nothing wrong with our education system if you live in a decent district. Most of the education problems are related to socio economics and poor parenting/single parent homes.
