For years, United States policy makers have been debating the idea of granting green cards to foreigners with science doctorates. The cell biologist Xiao-Wei Chen, at the University of Michigan, is no longer waiting for them to decide.

Mr. Chen, whose work on cholesterol metabolism helped him win a job competition this year at the National Institutes of Health, is instead making plans to return home to China and his undergraduate institution, Peking University.
Too bad we can't trick the feds into thinking he is a migrant from a third-world country with no education or job skills because then they'd pull out all the stops to make sure that they are accommodated and that they stay here.

And don't kid yourself into thinking this is all some kind of conk plot to drive down wages for high-skilled labor. People like Chen are making very good money and it's not like there are plenty of American-born people with science degrees who can replace a person with his skill level. This is only going to start happening more as China has more resources available to pay scientists. :ohno:

This is absolutely spot on.

I work in immigration every day and believe me-

The average immigrant with an immigrant visa is totally family based- so your loved ones in the US petition for you. If a scientist or someone else with extraordinary ability wants to immigrate they would be better off finding an American to marry them and then get the visa that way, because the bureaucratic morass they have to wade through to get a visa for extraordinary ability is Byzantine

We don't want Dr. Chen because he doesn't need to be on the plantation hooked up to the gubbermint feed trough. :ohno:
