The denominator held steady last month so the bleeding has been controlled somewhat. At least the participation rate held steady and there was modest growth across the board. For the first time in a long time, the indicator wasn't boosted by temporary and part time labor, but most of the jobs created were still low wage jobs.

For the "new normal" it was a good report.

Is replacing an $80K job with a $40K job the same? I'd be curious what the underemployment rate is now. CNN put a nice spin on it, but a job from 2006 isn't necessarily the same as a job in 2014.

The U-3 is virtually meaningless. Keep looking at the U-6 and other indicators such as the record number who are no longer in the work force, the record number on disability and the record number who are on some form of government assistance.

The large majority of jobs that are being created are low wage and temporary. Also, the rate of job "growth" isn't keeping up with the number of people like recent high school and college graduates who are looking for work.

One thing that is amazing is how unemployment can be down but so is GDP.

How can that be oh economic sages?

Wall Street loves cheap labor. I really don't think Wall Street/the Dow are genuine markers for American prosperity any more. These numbers only tell you that the investment class is prospering. What you really want to see is high consumer confidence, higher rates of spending and saving, etc., for the broader picture.

Exactly. The U6 is still over 12%. Someone wake me when it drops below 10%.

The labor force participation rate is still at a 35 year low of 62.8%. Someone wake me when it gets back above 65%:

Which holds true Citgrads statement that the number of jobs created isn't keeping up with population growth.

For a normal economy, any number south of 325,000 is not good, period. However, in the Obama era of lesser expectations, it was a good number for them.
