So says a USA Today poll. Negative grades for handling of the economy, foreign policy, health care, the environment, and terrorism.

Yup....

Reagan got the plurality for "Best President" in this poll. So apparently people do remember him. I agree with the poll results too. My memory hasn't faded at all in that regard. It's too bad the Republicans couldn't clone him or something because they sure as heck haven't been able to come up with another one like him.

Obama? He's a snarky little punk. And when I use the word "little" I'm not talking about his physical size. I'm talking about his stature. The fact that he's President of the United States is an absolute disgrace that calls the quality of the American People into serious question. A majority of the American people actually voted for that POS. Twice.

Obama, thankfully, will pass. But we've got the problem of having a population of people that would elect somebody like that.

On these polls over the year the sitting president also always is rated the worst president

If you go into the numbers you'll see that almost all Republicans voted for Reagan

The Democrats split their votes between Clinton and Obama with Carter getting some as well

If they did, he'd never win the primary.

legalized abortion in California before Roe v. Wade, gave amnesty to millions of undocumented workers, raised taxes, grew the federal government, advocated nuclear disarmament, etc. etc.

should be the worst of all time

Things will get worse for our failed president as time passes. He won't have the press protecting him any longer

100% agreed.

Tea Partiers and conservative pundits claim him as the messiah, but they wouldn't vote for him once they found out what he stood for. Just another example of the legend becoming greater than the man himself.

thats a cute liberal canard that has been thrown out quite a bit lately

nevermind that NONE of the Dem icons could win today either-

not Kennedy, not Johnson, not Truman

no Democrat president of the 20th century would even sniff a nomination for a school district vice superintendent

so the point is.. exactly... what?

What are undocumented workers? :?

Reagan gave amnesty to over 3 million illegal immigrants, which he later called the biggest mistake of his presidency.

He cut taxes overall.

Not that I am any great fan of Obama but I have to mount something of a defense. During the Clinton Administration there was a poll asking which President was the best on foreign policy since WWII. Clinton came out on top. And probably for the same reason that Obama came out at the top of this one. People are unfortunately very uninformed and naming even the current President is a challenge for most. But just as a test do what I did after the Clinton poll I mentioned. Ask folks to name all of the Presidents since WWII. On the other hand if you depress easily maybe you shouldn't.

So, John McCain and Mitt Romney can win the primary, but Reagan couldn't? :dunce: :silly:

Reagan signed the abortion bill into law after only 4 months into his governorship. He stated that if he had more experience, he wouldn't have signed it. His regret is what turned him into a pro-lifer.
Reagan granted amnesty as part of a "comprehensive immigration reform" (yeah, that same bullshit) package. He was persuaded (you know "compromise") by some of the leaders in his own party (the Boehener and McCains of yesteryear) that if he signed it Congress would step up border security and crack down on employers hiring illegals. Yeah, BIG mistake. Never trust a Donk to keep up their end of the bargain. As BDK said, he called it the biggest mistake of his presidency.
He did raise taxes, but he cut a whole lot more than he raised. Compromise with an all Donk Congress, right???
The Federal government did grow under Reagan. Name me the last president who actually shrunk the size of the government under his watch.
Nuclear disarmament?
When you win the Cold War, there is a need for disarmament.

Greasemonkey, you're like a battered wife. Always taking a beating and always coming back for more. :ohno:

Was invited to sleep in a winery tonight. I'm so happy. Goodnight.

It is interesting that when you delve down into the study, in general the more Presidents that respondents lived through the worse Obama fared. It looks as if those under 30 and Democrats account for the vast majority of his support and those over 30 and not Democrats account for the vast majority of those who see him as ineffectual and bad.

It is interesting to me that although the poll shows deep divisions along party lines, 26% of Democrats can't say that the country is better off because of Obama being elected rather than Romney.

Hard to say if Bill Clinton would be nominated today. His wife, with him backing her, had all the momentum and should've been able to win the nomination in 2008, and she couldn't get out of the Democratic primaries.

And I loved Truman, I thought he was a fabulous President - not perfect, but fabulous - but he wouldn't go over well in today's politics. Not enough personality to win an election today.

We tend for forget that during Reagan's presidency that the democrats controlled the house of representatives during his 8 year term and the senate for the last 4 ( I think) . Reagan did things that people long for today. Worked with the other side and compromised. You can argue all day whether he was good or bad but what we do know is that things got done during the Reagan presidency that was supported by enough democrats to make them happen. Blame or congratulate whichever side you want.

My point is that he is revered as some sort of small government champion of cutting spending when he was anything but.
