In what order what type of gun would you rank your preference/effectiveness for home defense?
i.e. handgun, rifle, shotgun, etc. Any preference on magazine size? Where would you keep it if:
1) In bed
2) Eating dinner
3) Watching TV
4) Playing with the kids.
Thanks in advance.

Two M134, one mounted in each inner corner of the house. Upon detecting an intruder, run to closest gun, depress trigger, sweep 90deg from wall to wall (at 3000 rounds per min., shouldn't take longer than 5 seconds).
Next, call 911, then call home repair contractor.

I sure hope the home repair contractor knocks first.

I PERSONALLY prefer the handgun (revolver, not semi auto--semi autos have a bad habit of jamming at the worst possible time, requiring precious seconds to clear jam and rechamber another round....revolvers (hammerless, preferrably) just require you to pull the trigger again to the next round), and you might as well keep it strapped on (no not THAT kind of strap on) or hope you have about 10 seconds of head start to get to it in the event of a home invasion.
Most experts would say they prefer a shotgun (because of accuracy issues under duress), but they're kind of difficult to carry around with you in the house.

You really keep your handgun strapped on while you are around the house?

Did I say that? No....but I HAVE thought about the potential consequences of NOT carrying it while I'm in the house. It really is relegated to only a "middle of the night" home defense weapon, since that's the only time it's within easy reach.
edit: I DO, however, carry it concealed whenever there is a delivery, appliance install, etc. that I know is coming to the house. And if you wonder WHY, pray tell, google Donna Pounds and Wayne Nance. Stranger shit has happened, even in lil' ol' Missoula Montana.

My absolute favorite is the 5 year old son on his birthday was given a rifle
With which he promptly shot and killed his 2 year old sister
To which the Grandmother said: "It was God's will. It was her time to go, I guess"
Are you fucking kidding me..!!!
Dear Lord: Could we please keep handing out guns in Arkansas (or Kentucky) to children
(Its Gods will) That a mother gave a 5 year old a loaded weapon then walked away - ah, the lord works in mysterious ways

Each home is different, ie kids, size, etc. I personally have a loaded, cocked, locked semi auto handgun at each end of my house. This method allows me to reach a weapon within 3 seconds at any time. No, they aren't in the open. The same can be achieved mounting a bio-lock gun safe (if children are in the home).
Ignore pacifist victims like Hippie. During dark economic times, people act out of desperation. In my neighborhood, LAST NIGHT, there were two home invasion robberies. ONE WAS TWO BLOCKS FROM MY HOME. A group of four males, one armed, forced entry into the home, demanding money, jewelry, valuables, took electronics, cell phones before focusing their attention on the couple's teen daughter whom they ordered to undress. The father resisted and while fighting, the preteen son fled and alerted neighbors.
I would keep a defensive weapon in my home if I lived in the Phoenix area. Probably not if I lived in Missoula.
Wait, Ursus lives there...disregard my last remark.

"It was God's will. It was her time to go, I guess," she told WLEX.
Caroline Sparks' death comes after two other incidents in recent months involving young children shooting others. In early April, a 4-year-old boy in Tennessee shot and killed a 48-year-old woman, and just days later, 6-year-old Brandon Holt was killed in New Jersey after being shot in the head by his 4-year-old playmate.

I have no children in the house so it is easier to keep guns loaded. I have a loaded revolver in my desk on the ground floor, another one by my chair on the first floor and a shotgun and semi automatic pistol by my bed on the second floor.

Thank you Chizzy.
Not quite the way you depicted it, but you're learning.

I own a Glock 22 .40 cal with three 15 round mags, a Mossberg 590 and a Springfield M1(M-14) with 6 (2o) round mags. I traded my Daniel Defense M4 last March to get my M1 Springfield.

4) Playing with the kids. No kids, but when friends bring theirs over the guns are on a high shelf out of reach and hidden

Sure it is, and it's pretty transparent. I don't mind answering the question however. It's not as though I'm leaving handguns with no safety sitting on the coffee table next to the candy dish for kids to pick up and use.
A few weeks ago my wife and I went to a movie. Upon coming home to our neighborhood there were police cars with lights blazing at several entrances to our area including a police car across the street from us. Not knowing what was going on, I went inside our house, retrieved one of the handguns and swept the house. Turns out that there was a guy who had killed his girlfriend a few days earlier that had been chased into our area and was holed up in someone's backyard ARMED.
This is something that happens very rarely, but I was happy to know that I was prepared to handle things if he'd broken into my house.

You might consider the "Judge". Pistol that shoots a 410 shot gun shell.....If I wasn't already "armed up" or if I ever moved into town I'd consider this.

Kentucky mother stepped outside of her home just for a few minutes, but it was long enough for her 5-year-old son to accidentally shoot and kill his 2-year-old sister with the .22-caliber rifle he got for his birthday, state officials said.
