Google's correct; it does say that 4000 American troops were sent to Iraq to help fight insurgents.

It's probably fake.

I think
Obama was right about AQ being on the run. They are running anywhere they damn well please in Syria and Iraq.

I wonder how Obama is going to explain arming and funding AQ in Syria, but droning AQ in Iraq.

Actually, from what I'm reading in other areas that I won't bother bringing here, this really isn't about AQ. It's about a Prime Minister (Maliki) who is desperately trying to stay in power because he will be arrested for war crimes once he is out (France I believe). Basically, he is staging this and since he controls almost all the media in Iraq, it's pretty easy for him to do. Many feel it is "his" security forces we are seeing dress as AQ. or are part of them. He supposedly has several generals on his personal payroll, who will also become "wanted men" before this is done.

The elections were held last month and the official results to be released by the 15th. He has repeatedly asked the current Parliament to declare an emergency because that would allow him to stay in power indefinitely, and he wants to be the next Sadam H.....basically......he is causing this whole mess in an attempt to stay in power because he knows he will not be given the PM spot again...he is being refused this and is trying to make things worse...but he will not succeed.

Additionally, from what I'm reading the stories hitting the news now are three days old and most of the cities mentioned have been at least partially recaptured.....many are expecting any hour now to hear that Maliki has fled the country. Several countries have offered him immunity if he would vacate his office. His family has supposedly already been shipped out to England....

Speaking of 4,000 troops...this is a good article from a year ago.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 60358.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As far as the current news...I was in the Deer Park eating dinner tonight when the TV, showing ABC World News, flashed, "Will Baghdad Fall?" This was followed with a bunch of arrows on a map showing a force from Syria taking over northern Iraqi towns and then heading towards Baghdad.

Entertainment TV at its best.

After what will be 16 years of incompetency, I am back to the point of voting for competency regardless of politics. Wish I saw someone on the horizon. :(

Interesting parts of the article...

"(Reuters) - Iraqi Kurds took control of the northern oil city of Kirkuk on Thursday after government forces abandoned their posts in the face of a sweeping Sunni Islamist rebel push towards Baghdad that threatens Iraq's future as a unified state.

Peshmerga fighters, the security forces of Iraq's autonomous Kurdish north, swept into bases in Kirkuk vacated by the army, a peshmerga spokesman said.

"The whole of Kirkuk has fallen into the hands of peshmerga," said Jabbar Yawar. "No Iraqi army remains in Kirkuk now."

"The army of the Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government in Baghdad has essentially fled in the face of the onslaught, abandoning buildings and weapons to the fighters who aim to create a strict Sunni Caliphate on both sides of the Iraq-Syria frontier."

and

"The million-strong Iraqi army, trained by the United States at a cost of nearly $25 billion, is hobbled by low morale and corruption. Its effectiveness is hurt by the perception in Sunni areas that it pursues the hostile interests of Maliki's Shi'ite-led government."

and

"Iraq's parliament was due to hold an extraordinary session on Thursday to vote on declaring a state of emergency, but failed to reach a quorum, a sign of the sectarian political dysfunction that has paralysed decision-making in Baghdad."
