Hillary's State Department Refused to Brand Boko Haram as Terrorists

Under Hillary Clinton, the State Department repeatedly declined to fully go after the terror group responsible for kidnapping hundreds of girls.

The State Department under Hillary Clinton fought hard against placing the al Qaeda-linked militant group Boko Haram on its official list of foreign terrorist organizations for two years. And now, lawmakers and former U.S. officials are saying that the decision may have hampered the American government’s ability to confront the Nigerian group that shocked the world by abducting hundreds of innocent girls.

In the past week, Clinton, who made protecting women and girls a key pillar of her tenure at the State Department, has been a vocal advocate for the 200 Nigerian girls kidnapped by Boko Haram, the loosely organized group of militants terrorizing northern Nigeria. Her May 4 tweet about the girls, using the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, was cited across the media and widely credited for raising awareness of their plight.

Putting Bolo Haram on the terrorist organizations list was not consistent with the "Al Qaeda is on the run" narrative, so it didn't happen. LOTS of decisions about places where Al Qaeda has been operating were made with these political considerations in mind. It hardly had anything to do with Clinton, she wasn't going to list anyone the WH didn't want to list.

I'll be honest.

There's lots of things I don't like about Clinton. I think her husband was, in the aggregate, a good President (with caveats). But I do not think she is her husband and it would be a mistake to think that. Bill was very reluctant about going into the Balkans. It took the rogue 5 foreign service officers in Sarajevo, combined with Madeline Albright and finally Hillary herself to convince Bill to hit the Serbs and free Kosovo (there will be another war there... maybe soon if Putin wants one).

Bill was a reluctant warrior but his wife has no such inhibitions. Her terms will be one of overseas interventions. If Syria was a do-over we would be bombing them under her. Libya was her baby. Until it became politically expedient to go the other way she was a supporter of both Afghanistan AND Iraq.

All of that said, given the last few years of being led by children it would be nice to have an adult back in charge.

I think she is smarter than her husband but nowhere near the natural politician and that she is more formidable as a cabinet member or as a Senator than as President.

Exactly what did Clinton do that was so great? The economy rolled during the .com boom. Clinton was the lucky sitting President for all of that. Obama was handed a tough economy which is a tough break. But he has done little to give Hillary a good footing. The next President must make hard financial decisions that Hillary will not likely make. Obama/Hillary is no Reagan.

He didn't fuck things up. I agree that he was the beneficiary of good economic timing, but he was smart/lucky enough not to do anything stupid to ruin it. No Iraq war, no ACA, just 8 pretty good years. Clinton may not go down in history as a great President, but he was far from being a bad one.
