Obama's drone war is a covert offensive conducted in remote places far from America, and it's easy to forget because it doesn't put our aviators at risk. But if our government thinks it is justified in killing people, it shouldn't act like it has something to hide.

Technology is a wonderful thing, so let's use it wisely:

We'll set up a TV show that allows American to vote on extinguishing terrorists from above. Live TV.

The White House will have several drones in the air, ready to launch their payload of whoop azz, with the TV displaying little capsules of information (with legal disclaimers) on each of the potential targets. The TV host will review a brief description of the targets (because most people don't read those little capsules anyway) and why our Administration thinks those targets should be terminated.

Americans can then call in, or use their resolutionary devices to text, to vote on whether those targets, all, some, or none, will be eliminated. Only $0.95 per vote for each person executed (taxes not included, multiple targets get a prorated discount).

Think about it...live TV executions of the Administration's most coveted terrorist enemies...all paid for, willingly, by concerned Americans, with the added bonus of transparency and efficiency.

Make it happen.

If you make this show with real criminals like the current administration, I'm in.

Steve Chapman was at Harvard when I was there. He was president of the Republican Club his senior year, but he was hard to take seriously back then. His Tribune columns are pretty good, and he has a libertarian streak. Not afraid to call out the GOP when necessary. He might succeed David Brooks as New York Times "house conservative": Steve is in that mold.

This is coming from a guy who swoons and faints at the mention of Nelson Rockefeller.

Rocky was a colorful character who loved politics, although the "little old ladies in tennis shoes" kept him from getting the nomination on his own. Steve's issue, in my view, was that he had "Texas swagger" at that time that seemed out of place at Harvard. He was probably more conservative then than he is now.

It's the way you carry it off. One of my classmates was Texan through and through, and wore cowboy boots (and hat) almost every day. He fit right in. Grew up to be a pro-business mayor of Houston.

I knew quite a few Jews at The Citadel.

Funny story about a Jewish senior in my company when I was a knob. Every three or four weeks, mess hall table assignments changed and each company designated a cadet to make the new table assignments. The guy in our company who made the table assignments was a Jewish guy named Maurice Warshaw.

On a day that table assignments changed, I walked into the mess hall, found my new table and quickly began performing my knob mess duties. When the order came to take seats, I looked at the next table and noticed that every black guy, including the black company commander, was sitting at the same table. Within a few moments, the entire corps of cadets noticed and the place was in an uproar.

By the time evening mess came around, the company's table assignments had changed and Maurice Warshaw was no longer the guy who made the mess assignments.
