It's been a rough week for Crystal Moore. She got fired from her job as the police chief in Latta, S.C., despite a spotless 20-year record with the department, and she's not alone in believing the town's new mayor fired her because she's a lesbian. It's the first time she hasn't had a job since she was 9, her health insurance runs out at the end of the month and she doesn't know where her next paycheck will come from.

But if the firing weren't enough of a shock, something else unexpected happened: Her community -- a tiny conservative town of about 1,410 residents -- is rising to her defense and demanding that she get her job back.

Dozens of people have picketed outside town hall and held prayer vigils. Kids she met while patrolling at a school have told her they support her. Members of the town council voted to take action to go around Mayor Earl Bullard and try to reinstate her job. Her former team of officers calls her every day to lend their support. And teachers, preachers and counselors in town have all approached her to tell her she deserves her job back and that her sexual orientation should have nothing to do with her job.

"People call us the Bible Belt in the South, and to have so much support is awesome. I'm going to tell you, it's amazing," Moore told The Huffington Post. "The good Lord has really blessed me with a lot of family and friends."

Have any straight people gotten fired because their boss didn't like them? :suspicious:

Or don't you care about straight people?

So it's because she's a woman or because she's gay?

Whatever happened to personal accountability?

Difference is, straights can sue. Gays can not in most states. It is clear she was fired SOLELY because she was gay.

A person can sue if they were fired because they were straight? Is that seriously what you're saying here?

If there is no cause, generally yes. In most states, a person can say - I don't want a gay person around, you're fired, with no recourse.

That's not what you said Jon. You said a straight person can sue, a gay person can't. I'm not sure if you just meant that in many states sexual orientation is not a protected class and just misspoke.

Would that work on this site?

P.S. You have got to be kidding if you really believe that. If somebody came up to me at work and said they didnt want a gay person around, I would tell them to STFU and get back to work, then I would be sued by both the gay and the straight and probably lose my business, you know......the American way.

Nobody cares if you are gay, trust me....and save the gay bashing stories for bedtime, those guys are getting their ass kicked for some other reason then playing the gay card. I already plan on using that if I ever get beat up in North Dakota, "he beat me because I am gay".

Its easy and effective.

Actually, no, it isn't.

The part you quoted merely states that she thinks she was fired for that reason, and the the article insinuates that the town is behind her for that reason.

But being somewhat familiar with police departments in SC as well as in other parts of the rural South, I can tell you that when a new mayor comes to town, the police chief is usually the first person gone, and it rarely has anything to do with the new mayor having a problem with that person. It is 9 times out of 10 because the new mayor simply has his own person he wants to install.

Or, maybe he DID fire her because she was gay. But there is no way from this article to draw that conclusion that way you have. But in SC, all municipal chiefs of police and police officers serve at the pleasure of their mayors and all can be fired without cause, and NONE of them can sue- straight or gay. You should do a little more research on SC civil law, as well as labor laws as they pertain to public safety in SC.

I didn't read the article but I do know that 96.3% of women that pull you over will rake you over the coals for whatever offense they can get away with...It doesn't matter if most of them get tossed out in court...just more for her to assert (sp) her 'girl power'.

Seven reprimands in one day after a twenty-year spotless record? It's clear the mayor was trying to base this as a fire-for-cause, but to establish fire-for-cause, a pattern of misconduct is required. Intentionally rigging a one-day string of "misconduct" doesn't cut it; in fact, I would consider that grounds for impeachment. If the mayor REALLY wanted to get rid of her, he should have just quietly dismissed her, using the no-fault procedure noted a couple of times in this thread. Going to this kind of trouble to manufacture a fire-for-cause was not only unnecessary, it makes the mayor look like a fool. That he IS a fool is borne out by the fact that he broke established protocol in going to the press with it and in failing to do it in coordination with the council. The article DID note that a separate issue here is the fact that the town was already considering switching to a weak-mayor form of government (up for a vote in a month or two), which would immediately give the council the power to re-hire the clearly top-notch chief. They've already voted to block the mayor from completing the hatchet-job by hiring a replacement before the referendum.

Whatever your feelings on homosexuality (not to mention all the issues associated with it), that alone is NEVER sufficient reason to terminate. Going after a mutual parting of ways or a no-cause separation is one thing, but if you're going for a fire-for-cause, you BETTER have something substantial to back it up.

The mayor screwed up royally. Idiot....

That's a common theme in many places, especially if the new mayor is of a different political party. Sarah Palin did this in Alaska, remember?
