In two different parishes, the offences occurred (in different years) in the presbytery (the house where priests live).

Father Holmes admitted that:

In 1969, he dealt indecently towards a girl, who was six to seven years old, at the Holy Name parish in Carlisle, a Perth suburb.
In 1980, he dealt indecently towards a girl, who was 10 to 12 years old, at St Aloyius parish in Shenton Park, a Perth suburb.
A magistrate ordered Holmes to appear next in Perth District Court in June 2014. when a judge will hold pre-sentence proceedings, followed by a sentencing.

Broken Rites consulted a recent edition of the annual Australian Catholic Directory (published in mid-2013). This says that the Camillian Fathers have their world headquarters in Rome. The Australian leader of the order is in Sydney. The order has 15 priests in Australia, nine of whom are each listed as a chaplain at hospitals in New South Wales. Father Patrick Holmes is listed as living in a Perth suburb.

The charges against Fr Patrick Holmes are a result of investigations by the Child Abuse Squad of the West Australian police into sexual assaults of children.

Anyone who is a victim of child abuse, or has information on child abuse, should contact police on 131 444.

What I am noting is your per-occupation with events which happened over 35 years ago, simply because it involved a priest. These victims are not the ages of my kids. Both are well into middle age now. And while it is certainly tragic that they were victimized as children, it is also tragic that far more children back then were victimized by predators and people like you don't give a damn about them because the predator wasn't a priest.

You only "care about the kids" when the predator is a priest. I don't call that caring about the kids.

We are disappointed and surprised that Cardinal Francis George is putting Fr. Michael W. O’Connell back on the job despite an accusation that he sexually assaulted a boy in 1990.

We have met this victim and find him very credible. And we've seen dozens of cases across the country in which Catholic officials have reinstated an accused child molesting cleric only to later oust him permanently.

It takes a great deal of courage and strength for child sex abuse victims to speak up. They often suffer in silence and self blame for decades. Accusations are rarely made lightly. We hope that others will not be discouraged by O’Connell’s reinstatement and that Catholic officials and parishioners will remain vigilant in reporting known or suspected crimes to secular authorities, not church figures.

Fr. O’Connell has worked in Lakeview, Orland Park and Lake Forest.

We beg anyone who saw, suspected, or suffered crimes by O’Connell or any church employee to come forward and report to police. It is never too late to speak up.
