So...apparently this happened in my home town

I don't know anything of this situation (i pay zero attention to my home town) other than what I'm about to post. One of my friends from HS "liked" this article and it showed up on my time line. I think I'll call my parents in a bit...

“I can’t believe how quickly the members of Iowa Gun Owners stepped in and helped us with this local problem. Tell them that gun owners in George extend a huge ‘Thank you’ to them and a bunch of us will be joining IGO immediately!”

This was the call that I got this morning from multiple residents of the city of George, IA, who were mobilized yesterday en masse with the help of Iowa Gun Owners as the George City Council was poised to vote, today, on a proposal to ban all defensive weapons on city property.

But unlike some of city bans that we’ve seen, this small town in NW IA has a true “Boss Hogg” mentality as the language had a carve-out for elected officials like the very City Council members who would be voting to end your ability to defend your family!

That’s right, “elected officials” would still be allowed to carry at the town hall, town pool, town baseball complex, etc.

...

You swarmed the City Council and mayor’s office with calls and the council immediately began to have second thoughts.

Of course, the city attorney, from the same law firm that drafted this “Boss Hogg” language in the first place, was working overtime with multiple emails to our office wanting the pressure to stop.

It didn’t.

Finally, after the word was spreading all over the state by email and social media the City Council announced that they were cancelling their meeting for today and doing away with this proposal on the advice of the same attorney whose firm drafted this language and put this sign (above) on the front door of the town hall.

...

The council has told some of you that this “Boss Hogg” proposal was done because they are concerned about a possibly “disgruntled” resident doing something violent.
My comment: George has about as much crime as...well...none. Homes and cars are routinely unlocked all day every day with not a worry.

...

All of this brings up a major point that hundreds of you have asked us about in the last day by calling, emailing, and sending us messages on Facebook – how is this possible when Iowa code 724.26 clearly states:

A political subdivision of the state shall not enact an ordinance regulating the ownership, possession, legal transfer, lawful transportation, registration, or licensing of firearms when the ownership, possession, transfer, or transportation is otherwise lawful under the laws of this state. An ordinance regulating firearms in violation of this section existing on or after April 5, 1990, is void.

Simply put, Iowa’s rabidly anti-gun Attorney General has issued a ‘finding’ where he announced that he would not be prosecuting municipalities for violating this code section.

This, in effect, gave cities and counties an open door to step through in violating your rights.

...

I have no idea what brought this on...or what the fuck is going on in my home town. I'll try to find out more...or if this is even real...I assume it is because that IS the door to town hall.

Doesn't suprise me one bit. The town is transforming from one of the last bastians of sanity (letting kids be kids, not over policing everything, etc...) to a typical "nanny town"...

George Mayor Says Gun Ban On City Property Is “Dead Issue”

Date posted - April 9, 2014

George, Iowa — According to a notice published in the April 3rd edition of the Lyon County News newspaper in George, the George City Council was to meet today to consider an ordinance that would have prohibited firearms or weapons in city buildings or on city property for everyone except elected officials and law enforcement.

This has caused much discussion and objection from people in the George area and those connected with the Iowa Gun Owners’ Association.

However, according to George Mayor Gary Siebring, it was all a mistake. He says the proposed ordinance and notice of the meeting were “published by accident”. He says the ordinance was drafted as one of several options to clear up a situation that the city had been having regarding weapons with one individual. Siebring says the ordinance was never considered by the council at any meeting. He says it will not be brought up again or appear on any future agenda. He says, QUOTE, “There will be no more discussion; it is a dead issue.”

George City Attorney Dan DeKoter says it was not intended to address a gun ban ordinance at the meeting. He says the city clerk had published the item in the newspaper without consulting the mayor and city council members. DeKoter says that city officials had informally discussed whether to control guns on city property after a man displayed one in the library.

Mayor Siebring says he shoots guns himself. He claims that no one on the council is against guns. In fact, he says no one on the council is for gun control. He says they had QUOTE, “no intent to jump on anyone’s second amendment rights.”

Siebring says he is “sorry for the uproar.”

We have a "George" Washington. The only restaurant in town is called the "Martha" Inn.

The closest town to George is Edna...seriously.

Story goes the towns got their names from a couple who managed the rail stations that ran through both towns. Apparently they were killed in a train accident and the towns were named after the person that hailed from it....apparently. It's the most commonly believed story - though no proof of that...or any other story. So, apparently that's how George and Edna got their names.

George is about 800 people and Edna is about 10-15 and is "unincorporated"

I guess my question is...if the measure was never to be considered why cancel the meeting? Why not just post that the ordinance would not be considered and still have the meeting?

Especially if this is all because of ONE person who visibly holsters his hand gun

Their city attorney is also the city attorney for my hometown too. He's an idiot. :ohno: Although maybe he's smart like a fox - I wonder how many billable hours he charged the city for dealing with this? :ohno: :ohno:

And having been involved in city government in Iowa for 15 years - a city clerk is not going to publish the notice for an ordinance in the paper unless told to by the mayor/city council/city attorney.
