Cali appellate court overturns $165 conviction for using cell...to look up alternate route map while stuck in traffic behind roadwork.

The plaintiff thought the law in question was being misapplied, and it took a second appeal to get that decision. Texting and actually chatting on the phone without a handsfree device is still illegal; texting is banned under a separate law passed after the one in question. He actually SUPPORTS distracted driving laws, but wants people arrested SPECIFICALLY for driving erratically; no more ticky-tack applications. He supports that kind of law because his son got his leg broken by a chatty driver.

I suppose I can see this...IF you have an applicable phone. I don't. But even if I did, I'm more likely to pull over (if able) to look up the map, or to have my A-driver do it (if I have one). A better idea (if I could ever afford it) would be to break down and get a Tom Tom....
