Interesting Proposal from the Wizard of Oz...

Ozzie Smith, bankrolled by Budweiser, is petitioning the government to declare baseball Opening Day a federal holiday.

That probably wouldn't help me much, but I like the idea. Opening Day is huge in places like Chicago, Cincinnati, and Boston, so I'm sure they'd love it.

Ozzie is about 20 years too late. Back in the '70's, there was an ACTUAL opening day where the majority of the teams played their first game of the season. Now the concept has been so butchered (with games in Japan, Australia, etc) and spread out over a fucking week that the concept of "Opening Day" is an oxymoron. Besides, baseball has become less and less relevant to Americans over the years....

Wrong sport to consider this for.

I bet the majority of Americans couldn't tell you what month opening day is.

The government already has WAY to many holidays. Shit. Baltimore City still takes off for Lincoln and Washingtons actual birthdays AND Presidents Day. :ohno:

Go Oz :thumb:

We do need a March holiday. Canada has a long weekend holiday every month.

Yes, we need another day where Federal workers get paid for doing nothing. :dunce:

What's the difference if it's a holiday or not, they still get paid for doing nothing.

Yeah, but the post office is already closed multiple days each week and even when it's open, it's only open for a few hours. Why add another day they can close?

As much as I love a paid holiday, there are plenty we could do without.
2014 Holidays

Wednesday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 20 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 17* Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 26 Memorial Day

Friday, July 4 Independence Day
Monday, September 1 Labor Day
Monday, October 13 Columbus Day

Tuesday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 27 Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, December 25 Christmas Day

I say remove the holidays in bold with Veterans Day and Christmas optional.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!

The Foreign Service has two perks:

1) intermittent or no access to US TV "news"

2) Both host country and US holidays

If you were to sync it up with the majority of the private sector, you'd get:
New Year’s Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after
Christmas Day

We used to get the Friday after Thanksgiving off, that was glorious.

In SC some people get Confederate Day off.

Don't you fucking touch Memorial Day. It's the unofficial start of summer and a great camping/floating weekend. :tothehand:
