Budget cuts and troop reductions are on tap for the U.S. military — if Congress gives its approval. But the U.S. will still spend hundreds of billions of dollars on its armed forces per year, even with the proposed cutbacks.

The $682 billion spent by the U.S. in 2012, according to the Office of Management and Budget, was more than the combined military spending of China, Russia, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Saudi Arabia, India, Germany, Italy and Brazil — which spent $652 billion, according to the SIPRI Military Expenditure Database.

US Military: Largest single consumer of petroleum in the world, too.

Discuss.

Base expenditures on what's good for the military and not what's good for defense contractors and that should pare down the spending a good bit.

That's about 25% of our budget.

Btw, I want you all to realize, that a portion of those govt's defense spending (except for China) gets spent in America.

Can't happen, every defense contractor owns several congressmen. We'll continue to buy shit that the General's don't want or need whether we like it or not....this is where the real welfare is. :coffee:

Complete bullshit, CID. We spend that much on those countries because WE would have it no other way, they don't beg for it. WE choose to maintain relics of the Cold War.

As I said in a different thread a while ago, many of those nations wouldn't shed a tear of we packed up and returned sovereign territory to them in the form of army and air bases. And, "krauts and frogs", huh???

You seriously need to bone up on your NATO history. Particularly the diplomatic side at the NATO mission in Belgium. The Germans and the French talk one game to their constituents and a completely different one with the US when they're at the table in Brussells. It has been that way for decades. With a resurgent Russia threatening her neighbors both with shutting off the gas (Ukraine) and outright military force (Georgia)- the LAST thing they want is a US drawdown in Europe, because they know it will spell the end of NATO as a viable deterrent.

And yeah... krauts and frogs- you should hear what they call US

I'm sure you would just love for the US to completely do away with the military and let China become the world's military force. There doesn't need to be an immediate threat of invasion. Having the military we do is deterrent enough.

But I suppose your Progressive train of thought would believe that just sitting around holding hands and asking 'bad guys' not to harm us will do the trick.... :ohno:

What do you think is happening at this very moment in Belgium? There PLENTY of "begging" going on as we speak- I figure Sevastopol will be Russian again soon

Whats wrong with letting China piss away their wealth trying to be the world's policeman, anyway?
