The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately.

When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.

The pistol sells for $1,399 and the watch retails for another $399 — more than double the cost of .40-caliber Glock handgun

So, assuming they go to a larger caliber for home defense - you'll have to put on a wristwatch, enter a PIN, and wait for the gun to activate in order to stop an intruder? If it takes that long you might as well wait 10 minutes for the cops to show up.

Nice! So let me get this straight the watch has an RFID and the gun has a chip to receive it. I therefore assume that means they can be tracked by the eye in the sky. Correct?

I agree. I can't see wanting to get a gun that you have to wear a particular wristwatch for.

I'm just thinking the following:
* You hear glass break
* you grab your watch
* you grab your gun
* you turn gun on, wait for it to synch to watch
* you get a green light , then confront the intruder with a .22.

FAIL

Just sleep with the watch on your wrist and the gun on your night stand in the on position.

Maybe the .22 is just a proving platform for the technology

But personally I can't get past the .22. If they come out with at least a .38 +P then I might consider the technology

I wasn't thinking about the caliber. I don't think I've ever shot a pistol. I used to hunt with shotguns and 22 rifles when I was young. You know, small game stuff. Ducks. Doves. Quail. Snipe. Rabbits. Squirrels. Biggest thing I ever shot was a racoon.

Recently I've thought of getting a pistol for defense. Getting a conceal/carry permit. Know nothing about them. Would have to be trained. But whatever I buy I don't think I'd like the idea of having one that would only operate if I was wearing a particular watch.
