I find Sam to be pretty darn interesting
This little 4 minute clip is (as always from him) excellent

1) The range of differences between "Religions"
2) The early Science

Did you get molested by a priest or something? You're getting to be like D1B with all your religion threads/posts.

Whether he's right or wrong, it was a thoughtful, provocative 5 minutes. I agree with Cleetus, it's truly an exciting topic. Why are you afraid of it?

The thing they don't get is that I LOVE the idea of GOD
True: I'm Anti-Stupidity but not anti-god
and I'm not necessarily anti-religion

It really is THE most fascinating topic  and the terrified true believers don't make it less interesting
They simply prove a simple point / Brainwashing works and its going to continue working

But lets open the door a crack and let some light and some air in here...

I took the same tack on religion in a previous thread, only along the sociological line instead of the "old science" line this guy takes, and was accused of oversimplifying and being apologetic.

I don't see anything groundbreaking in what he said. My own mother explained the metaphorical nature of the bible to me when I was hardly a teenager. I agree with him, in the same way I would agree with someone who made a 5 minute video explaining in breathless "look at my original idea!" fashion that geography is influenced by vulcanism and plate tectonics.

I'm not "afraid" as you put it- I'm just not as contemptuous about religion like some of you. If anything I should be asking some of YOU why you are so afraid of religion? Some of you sound like the fundies going on about the homos.

Isn't being "anti-religion" a "belief" or "faith"? Or dare I say, a "religion"?

Of course it is. So is progressivism.

Two of the most intolerant religions in the world.

And so is conservatism.

Yes, I think atheism requires devout faith for most. But I'm not an atheist, and even if I was I'd certainly tolerate religion. It's good for many.

But it's not beyond ridicule. There are many religious folks in the world in positions of inluence that, if you stripped away away the centuries of respect their particular faith has garnered (often at the point of a sword), would have no more legitimacy for what they believe than Scientology.

Curious about three things.

Do you believe in a personal God who is perfectly perceptible in dimensions beyond our ability to perceive?

If so, doesn't that mean that God can become incarnate and, in doing so. become actually perceived by human senses?

And isn't the most perfect personal God one who would choose at one point to become incarnate?

Simplistically and traditionally...no. As it pertains to modern politics, especially neo liberalism....yes. It requires and is driven by faith.

Progressivism is driven by the belief that things, mankind, are always improving. Not necessarily true.

Neither of these require a suspension of reality.

It just requires a recognition of the fact that all truth is not immediately perceptible to man, but exists in dimensions we do perceive through our senses.

It is not faith that drives me to make sure that I can comfortably cover my debts.

I'm "progressive" and do the same. In fact I'm quite risk averse. On the other hand, I've met a number of "fiscal conservatives" who be the first to roll the dice or throw money at a problem. I'm sure you do too. It's quite the dichotomy.

I've never met fiscal conservatives who would do that. If they did I would not classify them as fiscal conservatives.

Speaking of fiscal conservatism...

I'm hoping Jerry Brown gets into the 2016 race. I would have to take a very hard look at him and see if his ups outweigh his downs, but I could possibly vote for the guy.

Not at all. Lacking a belief does not equal having a belief.

If there weren't so many people trying to convince religious people of the wrongness of their beliefs I might agree with you.

Joe,
I don't really spend any time wondering about
The "dimensions beyond perception" where God seems to be hiding

God is an idea to me / probably the single coolest idea out there
and I love the idea that this universe was created by something - somehow

Mine is not a romantic vision
but none less exciting

I like Joe's notion of god here. But it's not the focal point of most religions is it?

You can probably get as close to god through psylocibin as you can through any church.
