Spending under Obama Declining...

As a share of the economy, spending on domestic and defense programs has been on the decline since 2010, and is on track to reach the lowest level in more than 50 years by 2023.

At its height in 2010, "discretionary spending" under Obama reached 9.1% of GDP. That was largely due to the stimulus law intended to dig the country out of a deep recession. But even at that high level, it wasn't that much higher than the 40-year average of 8.4% and was still below the 40-year peak of 10% reached in 1983.
Today, levels are well below the long-term average. And the Congressional Budget Office projects that by 2023 discretionary spending will fall to 5.3% of GDP, the lowest since 1962.

If you wait long enough after a drive-by shooting there's a point where the victim's bleeding slows too. Right before the organs start failing.

I'd argue that...
1. You should disregard the "trend" into 2023. The CBO is notoriously bad at anything numeric.
2. There may be a bit less discretionary cash lying around given the state of the unemployed/underemployed/no longer in the work force folks. Not that actually having the money laying around every stopped the government from spending it anyway. :coffee:

I always find the charts partisans (both sides) use to be quite interesting. Because they use very few labels between 2001 and Obama's term, it almost looks like he was under the 40 year average for most of his terms. Cut out 2001-2008 and it looks a little different. Also, how do you project spending to 2023 when somebody else will be in office in three years? :?

So remove the bubble and the emergency spending and he'd be about the same? Bullshit...he's the most socialistic spender in history...or something like that....

:? I'm saying this chart makes it look like a short blip. The bubble was a majority of his term.

The bubble started before his spending took affect. He's only responsible for some of it.

(Sensing a long drawn out 89hen argument leading to nowhere about to ensue)

And I'm sensing Kalm making a mountain out of a molehill regarding the observation that most often charts are manipulated to support the authors claims. :coffee:

We were also in a deep recession for a large part of his first term.

That would be part of the reason, but that's not what I was noting.

So Obama's dicretionary spending, after a massive increase 09'-10' during his 1st 2 years in office, when he had a near supermajority in Congress, started going down as a share of the economy (not inflation adjusted) in 2011. Wonder why that was..... :coffee: (hint hint 2010 election)

Did you even read what Ibanez quoted? It was less than 1% higher than the 40-year average at its peak, and well below the 40-year peak of 10% under your hero Reagan. :coffee:

Well, it's obvious that legislation like the Budget Control Act and the sequestration that followed have a hand in dropping the numbers. Good or bad, the country survived the initial sequestration. IMO, entitlement and tax reform should be next. Defense is always getting hit, not that it's necessarily bad, but there are more areas of waste than the DoD.

I'd say this is a good start.

But if anybody really thinks spending would be down if Obama had his statist way they must live in Colorado where the dope is legal.

Nice try with the preemptive strike on the switch in Congress in 2010, but that is the one single most significant change in the way the Obama admin has had to do business in 5 years, so to ignore it or brush it off is just denying evidence like a Creationist.
